Transplantation Of The Pancreas

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Although pancreas transplants have been performed for more than 30 years, the last few years have witnessed significant growth in the options available for pancreas transplantation. Transplantation of the Pancreas, edited by Drs. Gruessner and Sutherland provides a state-of-the-art, definitive reference work on pancreas transplantation for transplant surgeons and physicians as well as for endocrinologists, diabetologists, nephrologists, and neurologists. The editors, from the renowned University of Minnesota Transplant Division and the Diabetes Institute, have assembled a group of renowned experts to provide an all-inclusive overview of pancreas transplantation. The text features insights on the pathophysiology of diabetes mellitus and the limitations of nontransplant treatments, highlights experimental research and clinical history of pancreas transplantation, and compares and contrasts different surgical procedures. The discussions detail the broad spectrum of post-transplant complications and their treatments, which frequently require skills in general, vascular, and laparoscopic surgery; interventional radiology; critical care; and infectious disease. Chapters on pretransplant evaluation, immunosuppression, immunology, pathology, long-term outcome, quality of life, and cost-effectiveness focus on issues unique to pancreas recipients. Evolving areas, such as pretransplant evaluation of pancreas transplant candidates, living donation, and the current status of islet transplantation are discussed. Augmented by more than 280 illustrations, including full color line drawings created exclusively for the text, this book is the standard reference for all transplant professionals as well as for all physicians caring for the transplant patient.

Cystic Tumors Of The Pancreas

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book provides a detailed, up-to-date overview of cystic tumors of the pancreas, with coverage of all aspects of diagnosis and treatment (medical, endoscopic, and surgical). After opening chapters on pathology and classification, cytology, molecular biology, and epidemiology, the role of each of the relevant diagnostic methods is carefully examined. The treatment-related chapters describe surgical approaches, including minimally invasive surgery, as well as ablation modalities and chemo-radiotherapy. Thorough guidance is also provided specifically on the management of cystic tumors in high-risk cases and on follow-up. The authors are global opinion leaders in their field who have contributed cutting-edge chapters, with emphasis on clear diagnostic and therapeutic algorithms and with numerous supporting tables and illustrations. Owing to the widespread use of imaging modalities, clinicians are being confronted by an increasing number of patients with cystic tumors of the pancreas, ranging from benign cysts to metastasized malignancies. The widening spectrum of available diagnostic measures has resulted in controversy over the choice of further means of investigation when cystic changes are encountered, and the growth in therapeutic options has similarly been accompanied by considerable debate over their use. Against this background, Cystic Tumors of the Pancreas will be a valuable source of relevant information for both clinicians and surgeons and will also be of interest to radiologists, pathologists, and basic scientists.

Predictive And Prognostic Factors In Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is the most commonly diagnosed type of pancreatic cancer, with approximately 95% of all pancreatic cancers diagnosed being PDAC. Cancers of the pancreas are also notorious for a very low rate of survival, with recent reports showing 5 year survival rate being less than 5%, and PDAC being the fourth most frequent cause of cancer deaths worldwide, therefore the ability of clinicians to identify reliable prognostic biomarkers is of vital importance in improving patient outcomes. Due to the location and function of the pancreas, metastasis of the cancer from the liver into the lymph nodes, liver, lung, bones via either the circulatory system or lymphatic system emphasizes further the importance to identify biomarkers that can help make predictions about the progression, and metastasis of the cancer to other organs within the body sooner than has been historically possible. Currently, early diagnosis of PDAC among other pancreatic cancers is difficult owing to the current absence of validated screening techniques, and established reliable biomarkers, as of now CA 19-9 is the only approved biomarker however is known for limited specificity and sensitivity.
