A History Of The Royal Navy World War Ii

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The Royal Navy's operations in World War II started on 3 September 1939 and continued until the surrender of Japan in August 1945 - there was no 'phoney war' at sea. The navy played a central role in the evacuation of the retreating British army at Dunkirk, and later orchestrated the sinking of Germany's mighty battleship and Hitler's pride, the Bismarck. Without the Royal Navy's attention to the defence of Britain's seaborne trade - especially in the struggle against German U-boats in the Battle of the Atlantic - there would not have been food for the country, fuel for the RAF's operations or supplies to keep the army fighting in Europe, North Africa and the Far East. Yet the outstanding naval contribution to Britain's survival and eventual victory came at a heavy cost in terms of ships and to the men who had to face not just the violence of the enemy, but also the violence of the sea. This book argues that World War II was, effectively, a maritime war; it was the Royal Navy's war.

A History Of The Royal Navy World War I

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

World War I is one of the iconic conflicts of the modern era. For many years the war at sea has been largely overlooked; yet, at the outbreak of that war, the British Government had expected and intended its military contribution to be largely naval. This was a war of ideologies fought by and for empires. Britain was not defending simply an island; it was defending a far flung empire. Without the navy such an undertaking would have been impossible. In many respects the Royal Navy fought along the longest 'front' of any fighting force of the Great War, and it acted as the leader of a large alliance of navies. The Royal Navy fought in the North and South Atlantic, in the North and South Pacific, its ships traversed the globe from Australia to England, and its presence extended the war to every continent except Antarctica. Because of the Royal Navy, Britain could finance and resource not only its own war effort, but that of its allies. Following the naval arms race in the early 20th century, both Britain and Germany were equipped with the latest naval technology, including revolutionary new vessels such as dreadnoughts and diesel-powered submarines. Although the Royal Navy's operations in World War I were global, a significant proportion of the fleet's strength was concentrated in the Grand Fleet, which confronted the German High Seas Fleet across the North Sea. At the Battle of Jutland in 1916 the Royal Navy, under the command of Admiral Jellicoe, fought an iconic, if inconclusive battle for control of shipping routes. The navy might not have been able to win the war, but, as Winston Churchill put it, she 'could lose it in an afternoon'. The Royal Navy was British power and prestige. 43,244 British navy personnel would lose their lives fighting on the seas in World War I. This book tells their story and places the Royal Navy back at the heart of the British war effort, showing that without the naval dimension the First World War would not have been a truly global conflict.

U Boat Attack Logs

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

During the Second World War over 250 Allied warships from a dozen navies were sent to the bottom by German U-boats. This ground-breaking study provides a detailed analysis of every sinking for which source material survives from both the Allied and the German sides, resulting in detailed treatment of the fate of 110 vessels, with the remainder summarised in an extensive appendix. Uniquely, each entry is built around a specialist translation of the relevant segment of the war diary (log) of the U-boat in question, taken directly from the surviving originals – remarkably, this represents the first large-scale publication of the U-boat war diaries in any language. The book offers a wealth of new information, not only with respect to the circumstances of the sinkings from both the Allied and German perspectives, but also to the technical environment in which they lived as well as the fate of the crews. The entries include background details on the vessels concerned and the men involved, with a selection of rare and carefully chosen photos from archives and collections around the world. Each entry is itself a compelling narrative, but is backed with a list of sources consulted, including documents, published works and websites. A decade in the making, this is probably the most important book on the U-boat war to be published for many a year

History Of United States Naval Operations In World War Ii The Liberation Of The Philippines

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Each of these 15 volumes covers a period and campaigns in the Pacific, Atlantic and North African waters during World War II. It was Morison's aim to show what the U.S. Navy accomplished in the greatest of all wars and how it was done. The story, in the main, is one of fighting; that is what the Navy is for and what its entire effort was directed toward. But the author included enough space to strategic discussions, planning, organization, and logistics to explain the end product -- the naval operations. And when other armed services of the United States and her allies participated, he brought them in too, although not in so great detail. Filled with many maps, a number of them larger fold-outs, and black and white photos of the ships, personnel and operations.

The Royal Navy And The Battle Of Britain

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

From the dust jacket. This persuasive study attacks the key myths surrounding the Battle of Britain to revise the relative status of the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force fighter pilots, Anthony Cumming challenges the effectivess of the air force an argues that the Royal Navy deserves much greater prominence in winning the battle. To make his case, Cumming gives more attention to the views of the German soldiers, sailors, and airmen than had been previously done and vigorously asserts the success of British warships in countering the plans for Operation Sea Lion and in repelling air attacks by the Luftwaffe. He also notes the dashing figure of RAF Fighter Command's leader, Air Marshal Sir High Dowding, in comparison with the greatly maligned and relatively unknown naval commander, Admiral of the Fleet Sir Charles Forbes. Because of its heroic status, Cumming contends that the British opinion makers gave the RAF the lion's share of the glory because its colorful image could more easily be used to manipulate American opinion in support of the British cause. This ground-breaking book is one of the few academic studies to assert the primacy of the Royal Navy over the Royal Air Force in the defense of Great Britain in 1940. Cumming contends that the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain should celebrate the contributions of the many rather than focusing on the pilot elite.
