BOOK EXCERPT:
Professor Nicholas claims to be a man of science, but that might change after he and his wife take their five adopted children (A.J., Adam, Rachel, Allison and Cinnamon) on a trip into outer-space. The space traveler’s journey takes them to two distant planets. One of the planets is yellow and the other one looks much like Earth. The five children and Mrs. Nicholas can’t explain it, but they feel strangely drawn to the yellow planet. To their amazement the yellow planet draws their ship the Star Clipper towards it. After landing on that yellow planet, the Professor, his wife and children are soon caught up in an adventure. Part of this adventure takes place on the yellow planet which they learn is named Willow Weath. The other part of their adventure leads them to the earth-like planet. It is known as Tellus. Both planets are involved in a crisis. Nomis, the Head Servant on Willow Weath, is the one who sends the visitors and three helpers (Brandon, Anissa and Ann) to Tellus. While the adventurers are there, they find out just how serious the situation is. During their time on Tellus the travelers out run the agents of the evil Queen Ragnus onboard the submarine Dawn Star. The Nicholas’ then return to Willow Weath where they and the three helpers set out on a quest. Along the way they learn how the Trio: Sum, Crio and The Rider on the Clouds are always with them. However, as the family proceeds down the trail a foul being known as Mr. Furis tries his best to convince them otherwise. While on Willow Weath the adventurers stay in a tree castle. They also travel through an enchanted forest, a quarrelsome village, a dreary desert, a dark terrifying valley, fight a fierce battle, and climb a lofty peak. Along the path, the earthlings meet many people and learn many lessons. Are they the fulfillment of The Prophecy of The Seven, will they be successful in delivering the Mourning Stone to its proper home?

BOOK EXCERPT:
The thought experiment proposed by Langevin in 1911, known under the popular names, 'Clock Paradox' or 'Twin Paradox', is the most surprising result of the theory of Relativity: A twin who travels to a star at nearly the velocity of light comes back to Earth and finds his twin brother much older. In over a century, several thousands of published articles debated both in favor of and against this result. Unique to the physics of Relativity, this baffling phenomenon is analyzed as a main goal of this book.Among an incredible number of solutions, is there one of simplicity and clarity which may be accepted unanimously by all of the physics community? The answer is yes and this solution, which has its origin in Einstein himself, is developed in the framework of the Special Theory of Relativity. In detailing this solution, it is shown that the essential ingredient to understand the theory is the acceleration of the twins. All the models which do not include acceleration are incompatible with the original idea of Langevin. If one considers this phenomenon, several questions come to mind. Why did physicists debate excessively on the paradox and struggle to reach an agreement? Why was there resistance to integrate acceleration into their studies? Why is the solution developed in this book known only by a minority of scientists?Written for physicists, historians and philosophers of science, this book seeks to answer these questions based on (1) the psychological difficulty to accept the theoretical results, and (2) the fact that scientific knowledge is not uniformly distributed among scientists.

BOOK EXCERPT:
From the tiniest microchip to the information superhighway, the modern world is dominated by and dependent upon science. Yet whether we realize it or not, we live in an age where faith is still an important influence in our lives. The majority of Americans profess a belief in a Christian God and Islam acts as a unifying, energizing force for many of the world's most dispossessed people. In the UK congregations may be shrinking, but popular belief in the supernatural - ghosts and spirits, fortune-telling, faith healing - is stronger than ever. In The Story of God Robert Winston examines the relationship between science and religion across time, beginning with the primitive worship of early ancestors and concluding with a vivid portrait of faith in the modern world. Grand in scope, adventurous in tone - and written from the perspective of a respected scientist who is also committed to Judaism - this groundbreaking work traces a line across continents, cultures and eras.

From Saturday Night Rockin’ to Sunday Morning Reconciliation Before becoming a pastor, Jimi Calhoun performed alongside many world-famous musicians, including: Jimi Hendrix / Etta James / Hank Williams Jr. / John Lennon / Elton John / Mick Jagger / The Four Tops / Martha and the Vandellas / Rare Earth / Parliament-Funkadelic In A Story of Rhythm and Grace, Calhoun weaves together engrossing stories about racial differences and reconciliation from his life in the music world and his life in the church. Reflecting on how he has often found more racial harmony on the stage and in the recording studio than in the pews, Jimi shows what religion might learn from rock and roll.

BOOK EXCERPT:
"In olden days, in a village peopled by animal creatures, lived Wild Cat (another name for Lynx). He was old and mangy, and he was constantly scratching himself with his cane. From time to time, a young girl who lived in the same cabin would grab the cane, also to scratch herself. In vain Wild Cat kept trying to talk her out of it. One day the young lady found herself pregnant; she gave birth to a boy. Coyote, another inhabitant of the village, became indignant. He talked all of the population into going to live elsewhere and abandoning the old Wild Cat, his wife, and their child to their fate . . . " So begins the Nez Percé myth that lies at the heart of The Story of Lynx, Claude Lévi-Strauss's most accessible examination of the rich mythology of American Indians. In this wide-ranging work, the master of structural anthropology considers the many variations in a story that occurs in both North and South America, but especially among the Salish-speaking peoples of the Northwest Coast. He also shows how centuries of contact with Europeans have altered the tales. Lévi-Strauss focuses on the opposition between Wild Cat and Coyote to explore the meaning and uses of gemellarity, or twinness, in Native American culture. The concept of dual organization that these tales exemplify is one of non-equivalence: everything has an opposite or other, with which it coexists in unstable tension. In contrast, Lévi-Strauss argues, European notions of twinness—as in the myth of Castor and Pollux—stress the essential sameness of the twins. This fundamental cultural difference lay behind the fatal clash of European and Native American peoples. The Story of Lynx addresses and clarifies all the major issues that have occupied Lévi-Strauss for decades, and is the only one of his books in which he explicitly connects history and structuralism. The result is a work that will appeal to those interested in American Indian mythology.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Socrates, Plato, Descartes, Spinoza, Mesmer, William James, Pavlov, Freud, Piaget, Erikson, and Skinner. Each of these thinkers recognized that human beings could examine, comprehend, and eventually guide or influence their own thought processes, emotions, and resulting behavior. The lives and accomplishments of these pillars of psychology, expertly assembled by Morton Hunt, are set against the times in which the subjects lived. Hunt skillfully presents dramatic and lucid accounts of the techniques and validity of centuries of psychological research, and of the methods and effectiveness of major forms of psychotherapy. Fully revised, and incorporating the dramatic developments of the last fifteen years, The Story of Psychology is a graceful and absorbing chronicle of one of the great human inquiries—the search for the true causes of our behavior.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The three greatest scientific mysteries, which remain poorly understood, are the origin of the universe, the origin of life and the development of consciousness. This book describes the processes preceding the Big Bang, the creation of matter, the concentration of that matter into stars and planets, the development of simple life forms and the theory of evolution that has given higher life forms, including mankind. There are many popular and excellent science books that present various aspects of science. However, this book follows a narrow scientific pathway from the Big Bang to mankind, and depicts the causal relationship between each step and the next. The science covered will be enough to satisfy most readers. Many important areas of science are dealt with, and these include cosmology, particle physics, atomic physics, galaxy and star formation, planet formation and aspects of evolution. The necessary science is described in a narrative form that general-interest readers should understand, without the use of equations or formulae. This 2nd edition includes several updates on the subjects that form the pillars of this book. They are: cosmology and astronomy, the features and formation of the solar system, the origin of life, and genetics and evolution. This book will appeal to readers with an interest in biology and those curious about the origins of the universe.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Take a journey with George Poo as he travels from England to the United States in pursuit of the American dream. It's one of those good historical fiction books about the American dream and social issues that the Pacific Book Review called, “...one of the most original narratives within the humorous fiction genre.” It's a story that explores the American class system through a humorous style that is entertaining and easy to read. George Poo uses his scientific knowledge to create a successful fertilizer company that enables people to express themselves how they want. As he transforms into one of the wealthiest men in America, he founds a town in southern Maryland and creates a unique society. But will George ever achieve his dream of making America a better place? The Pacific Book Review went on to say, “the fusion of this (humorous fiction) genre and historical fiction genre made for an engaging plot, and study of the class system and corporate greed within a funny setting made the story stand out.” It’s a rare combination of humorous and historical fiction that combines social issues, the American class system, and the American dream to shed light on the greatness and problems of the United States. Readers will laugh and empathize with the “pooers” and “doers” that might make this story one of the best fiction books about the American dream or perhaps one of the best fiction books about social issues. Nonetheless, readers will get an important message in this humorous fiction book as the Poo family journey spans over 150 years. During that time, the story presents the best and the worst that our nation has to offer.
