BOOK EXCERPT:
A study of the emergence in post-Kantian continental philosophy of a focus on the lived experience of temporality. The project of all philosophy may be to gain reconciliation with time, even if not every philosopher has dealt with time expressly. A confrontation with the passing of time and with human finitude runs through the history of philosophy as an ultimate concern. In this genealogy of the concept of temporality, David Hoy examines the emergence in a post-Kantian continental philosophy of a focus on the lived experience of the “time of our lives” rather than on the time of the universe. The purpose is to see how phenomenological and poststructuralist philosophers have tried to locate the source of temporality, how they have analyzed time's passing, and how they have depicted our relation to time once it has been—in a Proustian sense—regained. Hoy engages with competing theoretical tactics for reconciling us to our fleeting temporality, drawing on work by Kant, Heidegger, Hegel, Husserl, Merleau-Ponty, Nietzsche, Gadamer, Sartre, Bourdieu, Foucault, Bergson, Deleuze, Žižek, and Derrida. Hoy considers four existential strategies for coping with the apparent flow of temporality, including Proust's passive and Walter Benjamin's active reconciliation through memory, Žižek's critique of poststructuralist politics, Foucault's confrontation with the temporality of power, and Deleuze's account of Aion and Chronos. He concludes by exploring whether a dual temporalization could be what constitutes the singular “time of our lives.”

BOOK EXCERPT:
Eve Otto explains, "When I began writing this book, I had in the back of my mind that those who are young now might someday be interested in what life was like when their grandparents were growing up -- how life changed drastically with the coming of World War II in Europe and the turbulent years that followed... the traumas of our emigration to America with our three young children and the difficult adjustments we had to make. My book, then, is sort of a legacy to them."

BOOK EXCERPT:
The Swiss theologian Karl Barth (1886–1968) was one of the greatest theologians of the twentieth century. This book shows how German and European history of that century—the First World War, the rise of Hitler, the German church struggle—resonates in the theological work of Barth. He opposed National Socialism and criticized the naturalness with which the West got carried away in the Cold War rhetoric after the Second World War. A beautiful, accessible overview work for anyone who wants to get to know Barth better.

BOOK EXCERPT:
This collection of essays, sermons, and prayers urges the church today to be the sort of community that sustains a vigorous and continuing conversation within itself as to who has called it into being, to whom it is responsible, and what it is called to be and to do. Jones reminds the church that it is an alternative political community called into being by the Gospel. This collection explores what it means to be such an alternative community in tumultuous times, in times when it is tempting to look to the world for answers, and to confuse loyalty to the nation-state with loyalty to God. A theme throughout all the writings is that the church is the necessary context for becoming and being a Christian.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Religion does not breed terrorism, hatred does. From Madhav Thapar the author of the much loved A Friend Like Karna comes his second novel The Times We Live In. This is a world of terror and treachery, but also patriotism and hope. Spanning the seven decades and more since India and Pakistan gained Independence; it cleverly juxtaposes references to true events with a tale of different generations of two families separated by the bloodiest partition ever. At the centre of the narrative is the hunt for the dreaded terrorist, code named Cobra. As the faceless enemy spreads his tentacles of terror, the Indian RAW is in relentless pursuit, and the body count rises. The action shifts rapidly from scene to scene across three continents and multiple timelines. Yet, this is not a thriller alone. In his trademark style, the author brings forward various aspects of human drama: love, sacrifice and family values, even as he unravels the motivation and machinations of a criminal mind. Suspense till the very end, and twists and turns throughout.

DIVThe 21st Century commodity is time. But unless we have an understanding of how God sees and uses time, the foundation of our lives and our calling—all that we can be as followers of Jesus Christ—will not be aligned with His plan for us./div

BOOK EXCERPT:
I wrote this book for a number of reasons. First of all, God has been very good to me and I know that he wants me to respond to his love. God has given me many gifts besides the gift of love. For example faith, hope, family, and the abilities to do his will. With all that he has done for me, I want to let others know that he lives and is very much in touch with each of us. So much so that he sent his Son to die for our sins so that we have become children of God and heirs to the kingdom. All that we need to do is to love others as ourselves and accept his gifts. Scripture has said that he knocks on our doors and that whoever opens the door for him, he will enter and have supper with them. With the gifts of faith and hope, I can find peace in my future. I would like everyone to know the love that God has for them. However there are those who say that God is dead or that there is no God. I feel sorry for them for they have no hope for their future when it comes to eternal life with God. This world and all that it holds will never make them happy. I have shared where I have seen God in my life and have had my friends also share God in their lives in hope that other may believe and change their hearts and lives to serve God and others. Jesus told his disciples to go and teach all nations. We can't do this unless we stand up or speech up for our faith and our God. Sharing our faith and by showing our faith is one of the best ways of teaching all nations. We as parents and Christians must teach our children and others to do what Jesus want us to do. He died for our sins and wants us to finish the job of spreading the truth and the faith that he has given to us. The gifts of faith, hope, love, and forgiveness are too special to waste. We need to use them each chance that we have. If we don't use them, we will become weak in our faith and become like the worthless servant that buries his master's money. We need to invest in our future of eternal life and the future of others.
