BOOK EXCERPT:
One of today's most pressing issues in criminology and crime prevention is the problem of crime in our cities and towns and its prevention. The topic of crime prevention in the Urban Community was discussed at the 47th International Course of the International Society for Criminology (ISC) held at Chuo University, Tokyo. It was the very first time such an ISC meeting was held in Asia and this meant that finally a relatively large number of Japanese and other Asian participants were able to express their views on criminal policy and crime prevention in urban centres all over the world. Crime in urban communities is not an exclusively Western phenomenon, but it is also a considerable problem in other parts of the world. This makes an interchange of ideas between Western, Eastern and Third-World criminologists particularly important. General characteristics of the urban communities that suffer from a high crime rate are ethnic and racial tensions, a mix of old housing areas and new business districts, a prevailing sense of anonymity, slums and juvenile delinquency. The existence of these general characteristics besides mutual differences makes cooperation in the crime prevention sphere definitely worth the effort.

BOOK EXCERPT:
This book explores the many facets of black urban life from its genesis in the 18th century to the present time. With some historical background, the volume is primarily a contemporary critique, focusing on the major themes which have arisen and the challenges the confront African Americans as they create communities: political economy, religion and spirituality, health care, education, protest, and popular culture. The essays all examine the interplay between culture and politics, and the ways in which forms of cultural expression and political participation have changed over the past century to serve the needs of the black urban community. The collection closes with analysis of current struggles these communities face - joblessness, political discontent, frustrations with health care and urban schools - and the ways in which communities are responding to these challenges.

This book presents a rich case study examining physical and spatial factors of urban campus design that influence student experience and wellbeing. The text details important historical context illustrating the foundational concepts and purpose of college sites in the United States and maps economic reforms and policies which have driven the development of today’s inner-city campuses. Focusing on Bronx Community College, New York, and looking specifically at how the presence or absence of green space impacts students, the text then draws on diverse student voices to examine how students use open spaces, and how this influences their sense of belonging, stress reduction, and scholarly identities. The author’s historical and qualitative research presents original insights and relies on a rich body of textual and on-site investigation. BOOK EXCERPT:
The community is more than an abstract object of theoretical inquiry. It is also a place where people live. It is difficult to determine where community research and theory merge, because the community is a unique place where theory and the real world come together. Local conditions change and new research techniques emerge. In the second edition of The Community in Urban Society, the authors solve this problem by distilling the historic and foundational theories of community, applying traditional approaches (typology, ecology, systems theory, and conflict theory) to current conditions, and exploring new and relevant theories that impact todays communities. The latest edition also examines recent and emerging technologies that facilitate examination and evaluation of the modern community condition. Updated coverage includes topics such as New Urbanism, modern network analysis methods, the urban political economy approach to community, the growth machine approach, GIS mapping, recent holistic studies, cyberspace communities, and up-to-date discussions of community indicator studies, quality of life, community power, and regime politics.
