This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the joint conference on Machine Learning and Knowledge Discovery in Databases: ECML PKDD 2009, held in Bled, Slovenia, in September 2009. The 106 papers presented in two volumes, together with 5 invited talks, were carefully reviewed and selected from 422 paper submissions. In addition to the regular papers the volume contains 14 abstracts of papers appearing in full version in the Machine Learning Journal and the Knowledge Discovery and Databases Journal of Springer. The conference intends to provide an international forum for the discussion of the latest high quality research results in all areas related to machine learning and knowledge discovery in databases. The topics addressed are application of machine learning and data mining methods to real-world problems, particularly exploratory research that describes novel learning and mining tasks and applications requiring non-standard techniques.

This book provides the research directions for new or junior researchers who are going to use machine learning approaches for biological pattern discovery. The book was written based on the research experience of the author's several research projects in collaboration with biologists worldwide. The chapters are organised to address individual biological pattern discovery problems. For each subject, the research methodologies and the machine learning algorithms which can be employed are introduced and compared. Importantly, each chapter was written with the aim to help the readers to transfer their knowledge in theory to practical implementation smoothly. Therefore, the R programming environment was used for each subject in the chapters. The author hopes that this book can inspire new or junior researchers' interest in biological pattern discovery using machine learning algorithms.

Reward Deficit Disorders is written for researchers in both academia and the pharmaceutical industry who use animal models in research and development of drugs for reward deficit disorders such as alcohol dependence, nicotine dependence, heroin and cocaine addiction, obesity, and gambling and impulse control disorders. Reward Deficit Disorders has introductory chapters expressing the view of the role and relevance of animal models for drug discovery and development for the treatment of psychiatric disorders from the perspective of (a) academic basic neuroscientific research, (b) applied pharmaceutical drug discovery and development, and (c) issues of clinical trial design and regulatory agencies limitations. The proceedings of ECML/PKDD2003 are published in two volumes: the P- ceedings of the 14th European Conference on Machine Learning (LNAI 2837) and the Proceedings of the 7th European Conference on Principles and Practice of Knowledge Discovery in Databases (LNAI 2838). The two conferences were held on September 22–26, 2003 in Cavtat, a small tourist town in the vicinity of Dubrovnik, Croatia. As machine learning and knowledge discovery are two highly related ?elds, theco-locationofbothconferencesisbene?cialforbothresearchcommunities.In Cavtat, ECML and PKDD were co-located for the third time in a row, following the successful co-location of the two European conferences in Freiburg (2001) and Helsinki (2002). The co-location of ECML2003 and PKDD2003 resulted in a joint program for the two conferences, including paper presentations, invited talks, tutorials, and workshops. Out of 332 submitted papers, 40 were accepted for publication in the ECML2003proceedings,and40wereacceptedforpublicationinthePKDD2003 proceedings. All the submitted papers were reviewed by three referees. In ad- tion to submitted papers, the conference program consisted of four invited talks, four tutorials, seven workshops, two tutorials combined with a workshop, and a discovery challenge.

This book includes a novel motif discovery for time series, KITE (ill-Known motIf discovery in Time sEries data), to identify ill-known motifs transformed by affine mappings such as translation, uniform scaling, reflection, stretch, and squeeze mappings. Additionally, such motifs may be covered with noise or have variable lengths. Besides KITE’s contribution to motif discovery, new avenues for the signal and image processing domains are explored and created. The core of KITE is an invariant representation method called Analytic Complex Quad Tree Wavelet Packet transform (ACQTWP). This wavelet transform applies to motif discovery as well as to several signal and image processing tasks. The efficiency of KITE is demonstrated with data sets from various domains and compared with state-of-the-art algorithms, where KITE yields the best outcomes.

The 7th Paci?c Asia Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining (PAKDD) was held from April 30 to May 2, 2003 in the Convention and Ex- bition Center (COEX), Seoul, Korea. The PAKDD conference is a major forum for academic researchers and industry practitioners in the Paci?c Asia region to share original research results and development experiences from di?erent KDD-related areas such as data mining, data warehousing, machine learning, databases, statistics, knowledge acquisition and discovery, data visualization, and knowledge-based systems. The conference was organized by the Advanced Information Technology Research Center (AITrc) at KAIST and the Statistical Research Center for Complex Systems (SRCCS) at Seoul National University.
