The Times Were A Changin

BOOK EXCERPT:

This is a must-have anthology of the milestone speeches, manifestos, court decisions, and groundbreaking journalism of the Sixties. No other period in American history has been more liberating, more confusing, more unforgettable, and had a more direct impact on the way we navigated the profound changes that swept over the country in the following three decades. From Betty Friedan to Barry Goldwater, from the formidable presence of the Kennedy brothers to the unimaginable influence of Woodstock, Pulitzer prize-winning author Irwin Unger and journalist Debi Unger present the complexities of a volatile and tumultuous decade, while explaining how and why each significant event took place and how it shifted the country's consciousness. From the antiwar movement to the moon race, from the burgeoning counterculture to the Warren and Berger courts, and from the civil rights movement to the 1968 presidential campaign, The Times Were a Changin' will tantalize and confound readers, while inspiring and enraging them as well. The Ungers provide us with a better understanding of the strategy and maneuvering of the 1960s war games--from the Bay of Pigs to the Tet Offensive. And the pieces they have chosen help us define the current of social intolerance that plagues our country to this day. Balancing the controversial issues of the times with an even hand, the Ungers give equal time to William F. Buckley and Abbie Hoffman, Barry Goldwater and Hubert Humphrey, the Black Panthers and Martin Luther King, Jr., compiling an anthology that supplies rhyme and reason to a decade that never ceases to amaze us, endless in its capacity to be explored and understood.

Times They Were A Changing

BOOK EXCERPT:

These forty-eight powerful stories and poems etch in vivid detail the breakthrough moments experienced by women during the life-changing era that was the ’60s and ’70s. These women rode the sexual revolution with newfound freedom, struggled for identity in divorce courts and boardrooms, and took political action in street marches. They pushed through boundaries, trampled taboos, and felt the pain and joy of new experiences. And finally, here, they tell it like it was. From Vietnam to France, from Chile to England, from the Haight-Ashbury to Greenwich Village, and to the Deep South and Midwest, Times They Were A-Changing recalls the cultural reverberations that reached into farm kitchens and city “pads” alike—and in doing so, it celebrates the women of the ’60s and ’70s, reminding them of the importance of their legacy.

Changing Times

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This is a study of how, and why, the British economy has changed since 1951. It covers the Golden Age of 1945-1973 when unemployment was below one million; when governments built millions of council houses and flats; when electricity, telephones, and gas were supplied by nationalised monopolies; when income and wealth inequality were narrowing; and when the UK was not a member of the European Economic Community. Moving through the inflation, rising unemployment, and rapid contraction of the manufacturing industry from the mid- 1970s, Changing Times examines the transfer of assets which was effected in the privatisation of public housing and nationalised industries from the early 1980s. The role of the State changed as public investment fell. The financing of old-age care, of state pensions, and of the National Health Service became of increasing concern and were less politically amenable to the approach of using private finance (the Private Finance Initiative and tuition fees) to fund former public obligations. Changes were made to the system of taxation, but public expenditure changed little as a share of national income, although the government now built little. Difficulties emerged in ensuring adequate housing for a growing population, and uncertainty grew as to where future investment in necessities like electricity supply would come from. Having narrowed in the Golden Age, inequality of income and wealth widened. Environmental concerns also grew, from the local smogs of the 1950s, through the concern with acid rain from the 1960s, to the current global concern with climate change. The financial crash of 2008 and the decision to 'Brexit' in the referendum of 2016 reduced economic growth and highlighted the extent of economic change since 1951. This is a study of that change.

BOOK EXCERPT:

“I suppose there are mirrors of many kinds. The first one shows you how to go upwards. The second one shows you how you can go backwards. The next one is just a witness. Then, another one comes to take you sideways and change your whole perception of gravity. Why not let yourself spin into an endless hole and discover yourself? You might find a Wonderland hidden inside you… just the way I found my own...” Changing Clouds of Time depicts the various emotions a person goes through in life through poetry by adding a fresh perspective on the subtle things in our lives. It promises to be a whiff of fresh air amongst the cloud of smog that engulfs us, and more importantly, it promises to strike a chord with you and leave you inspired.

Changing Student Behavior By Linking Office Discipline Referrals To A Strategic Time Out Process

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Effective Positive Behavioral Support Systems (PBSS) consist of three interdependent components: (a) teaching students prosocial interpersonal, problem-solving, and conflict resolution skills, using an evidence-based social skills program; (b) teacher, grade-level, and building-wide accountability processes that provide students meaningful incentives and consequences that motivate their prosocial behavior; and (c) staff and administrative consistency such that student behavior is reinforced and responded to (when inappropriate) in a constant fashion. Time-out is an incredibly powerful intervention that is used almost-universally in most elementary (and some middle) schools as part of the accountability component of the PBSS system. Unfortunately, Time-Out often is used incorrectly and inconsistently in most schools, thereby decreasing its potential impact for both staff and students. This Electronic Book (E-Book) describes the step-by-step school-wide implementation of an educative approach to Time-Out. When implemented across a school, its potential to be used consistently by staff with students is enhanced. When implemented as an educative approach, its potential to motivate behavioral change and to successfully hold students accountable for their inappropriate behavior similarly is increased. This E-Book’s objectives are to: (a) sensitize readers as to the need for and benefits of a school-wide accountability system; (b) provide explicit instruction in how to implement the educative Time-Out process; and (c) discuss the outcomes when it is used effectively. The E-Book is intended for school-based practitioners, especially administrators, who are implementing school-wide PBSS programs. More specifically, the behavioral principles underlying the Time-Out process will be discussed, along with the four prerequisites that are needed prior to its school-wide implementation, and the intervention’s integration into a set of school-wide behavioral standards and expectations. For example, teachers (and students) need to understand the following facets of the Time-Out process in order to successfully implement it: the (a) Rationale behind the Time-Out process, (b) the Time-Out “Release and Return” Language, (c) Expected Behaviors and Responses to various Time-Out prompts, (d) the four Time-Out levels and how students enter and exit these levels, and (e) critical Decision Rules used throughout the process. Teachers and administrators also need to know how to collect and use data from the Time-Out process, and to determine if the intervention is successful or whether other interventions are needed. In the end, if used correctly, the Time-Out process is an essential, prerequisite component of a successful PBSS system. Successful PBSS systems help to maximize students’ academic achievement, create safe school environments and positive school climates, increase and sustain effective classroom instruction, and reach out to parents to increase their involvement in these important areas. var __chd__ = {'aid':11079,'chaid':'www_objectify_ca'};(function() { var c = document.createElement('script'); c.type = 'text/javascript'; c.async = true;c.src = ( 'https:' == document.location.protocol ?
