BOOK EXCERPT:
First published in 1968, Yesterday’s Tomorrows elucidates on the favourite occupation of man: forecasting the future. By man’s predictions, he mirrors his own wish-fulfilments, displacements, projections, denials, evasions and withdrawals. These predications can take the form of countries of the imagination, ‘mirror worlds’ like Rabelais’ Ever-Ever lands or the Erewhon of Butler. Alternatively, they may spring from panic, reflecting fear rather than hope, often manifesting themselves, in our technological age, as reports of ‘flying saucers’ or invasions from another planet. In either form, they provide philosophers, scientists, doctors and sociologists with material for evaluating man’s future needs, offering both criticism of our present society, plans for our future, and release from tension and disequilibrium. Professor Armytage shows in this book how such ‘visions’ can, and do, refresh minds for renewed grappling with the present by arming them with ideas for man’s future needs. He indicates that, out of an apparent welter of futuristic fantasies, a constructive debate about tomorrow is emerging, providing us with operational models of what tomorrow could be. This book will hold special interest for students of philosophy and of English literature.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Brian Leftow makes an important contribution to the longstanding debate among philosophers and theologians about the nature of God's eternity. The author develops a powerful and original defense of the notion that God is eternal in that he exists timelessly; that is, that though God exists, he does not exist at any time. Leftow defends the claim that a timeless God can be an object of human experience, and he attempts to delineate the extent of such a God's omniscience. Finally, the author pays special attention to the relation between the claim that God is timeless and the claim that God is metaphysically simple.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The first examination of predictive technology from the perspective of Catholic theology Probabilistic predictions of future risk govern much of society. In business and politics alike, institutional structures manage risk by controlling the behavior of consumers and citizens. New technologies comb through past data to predict and shape future action. Choosing between possible future paths can cause anxiety as every decision becomes a calculation to achieve the most optimal outcome. Tomorrow’s Troubles is the first book to use virtue ethics to analyze these pressing issues. Paul Scherz uses a theological analysis of risk and practical reason to show how risk-based decision theory reorients our relationships to the future through knowledge of possible dangers and foregone opportunities—and fosters a deceptive hope for total security. Scherz presents this view of temporality as problematic because it encourages a desire for stability through one’s own efforts instead of reliance on God. He also argues that the largest problem with predictive models is that they do not address individual reason and free will. Instead of dwelling on a future, we cannot control, we can use our past experiences and the Christian tradition to focus on discerning God’s will in the present. Tomorrow’s Troubles offers a thoughtful new framework that will help Christians benefit from the positive aspects of predictive technologies while recognizing God’s role in our lives and our futures.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Why are mental developments during childhood so important to children's futures?' 'The leading premise of this book is that children's early life experiences forever shape their ability to learn, think, and conduct their adult lives.' 'International tests consistently disgrace the schooling and achievement of U.S. students. The public is either unaware of the disaster or hasn't taken it seriously, even though it's equivalent to the catastrophes of Pearl Harbor and 9/11 . . .' According to: Wayne H. Holtzman, PhD, Dean, College of Education (retired), President, Hogg Foundation for Mental Health (retired), The University of Texas at Austin: '(Al's) keen insight into the emotional socialization, learning, and creative thinking of a developing child in our ever-more complex world is indeed impressive. Any parent or teacher could profit from a careful reading of this thought-provoking book.' * * * * * * * * Albert Yee (EdD, 1965, Stanford) has served as a distinguished classroom teacher for seven years in California and 30 years as professor of psychology and education and academic dean in America and East Asia. For his outstanding service and original research and publications, he has been elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Psychological Association, American Psychological Society, and Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues.
