As the air travel industry begins to emerge from the COVID-19 restrictions, new research must be undertaken to survey the changing business landscape. This book examines existing air travel literature, illustrates the current theories in the field, and suggests research methods for integrating them in fieldwork. The book begins by surveying the landscape of air travel research and examining key theoretical frameworks such as grounded theory, institutional theory, prospect theory, and the theory of planned behavior. It then explores when qualitative and quantitative research methods are appropriate for use in air travel research, and how they can be applied successfully. Gathered contributors from Southeast Asia and the Middle East highlight some of the latest issues, including the impacts of COVID-19 on airfreight, airline catering, and passenger perceptions of security and safety. Future directions for research are also proposed. While change in the aviation sector is hardly a new phenomenon, going forward the rate of change will accelerate due to the emergence, convergence, and intersection of powerful internal and external forces. To deal with the accelerating change in the marketplace, stakeholders in the travel ecosystem need to deepen collaboration that is productive to (1) building adaptable, resilient, and lean businesses, (2) achieving growth and innovation, (3) elevating traveler experience to a much higher level, and, at the same time, (4) reducing the impact on the environment. Air travel has expanded hugely and in 2005, 228 million passengers travelled through UK airports. This title looks at the passenger experience of air travel from purchasing a ticket to boarding the plane, including travel to and from the airport, check-in and security, and complaint resolution.

This report is a follow-up to an earlier report published in 2000 (HLP 121-I, session 1999-2000, ISBN 9780104442005), on air travel and health. That report acted as a stimulus to further research into the health of air crew and passengers, and led to a broader examination of such issues. The report also led to the setting up of the Aviation Health Working Group in 2001, and later the Aviation Health Unit, in 2003, within the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), which acts as a focal point for aviation health in the UK. In this report the Committee sets out the current situation, and still finds issues that remain of concern, particularly the risk to air travellers of venous thromboembolism (VTE). A WHO study is to examine VTE risk for individuals with existing risk factors, and the Committee urges the Government to continue to support this project. The Committee also believes that further investigation into the effects of fumes on pilots and others should be continued. The Committee has set out a number of recommendations, including: that jet lag should be studied as a confounding effect of DVT; that the Government should explore ways to increase the research capacity in aviation health; that the CAA should implement the recommendations of its own research into aircraft seating standards, and increase the minimum seat pitch to at least 28.2 inches; the Government should also review the level of air passenger duty levied on "premium economy" seating; also that the Government and airlines advise passengers on the proven benefits of good hygiene in the reduction of disease transmission, and that as part of their contingency plans airlines that are flying from areas affected by a pandemic, should provide bacterial wipes to passengers; that the Government and the AHU work together with airlines and others in providing consistent air travel advice to passengers on the risks associated with self-medicating with the intention of preventing DVT.

Since the 2006 edition was published, several incidents occurred involving air travel and potential transmission of TB. The revision of the International Health Regulations (IHR), which entered into force in June 2007, provided for the introduction of new measures that might potentially apply to international events involving TB. This edition builds upon the 2006 edition and adds to it in providing: (i) greater clarity in the definition of infectious index cases; (ii) procedures for the follow-up of contacts of infectious cases; and (iii) a more detailed definition of the roles and responsibilities of the agencies involved.
