Over the past three decades, Jean-Luc Nancy has become one of the most celebrated contemporary philosophers. His remarkably diverse body of work, which deals with such topics as post-Heideggerian ontology, Christian painting, the experience of drunkenness, heart transplants, contemporary cinema and the problem of freedom, is entirely "immersed" in modernity, as he puts it. Within this plural framework, art – which he explicitly defines as a modern construct – plays a singular role in that it is the very prism through which he explores the problems of sense and feeling in general, particularly as they relate to “our” experience of modernity. The contributors to Understanding Nancy, Understanding Modernism fully delve into the heretofore under-acknowledged and under-explored modernism of Nancy's writings on philosophy and the arts through close readings of his key works as well as broader essays on the relationship between his thought and aesthetic modernity. Henri Bergson is frequently cited amongst the holy trinity of major influences on Modernism-literary and otherwise-alongside Sigmund Freud and William James. Gilles Deleuze's Bergsonism has re-popularized Bergson for the 21st century, so much so that, perhaps, our Bergson is Deleuze's Bergson. Despite renewed interest in Bergson, his influence remains understudied and consequently undervalued. While books examining the impact of Freud and James on Modernism abound, Bergson's impact, though widely acknowledged, has been closely examined much more rarely. Understanding Bergson, Understanding Modernism remedies this deficiency in three ways. First, it offers close readings and critiques of six pivotal texts. Second, it reassesses Bergson's impact on Modernism while also tracing his continuing importance to literature, media, and philosophy throughout the twentieth and into the 21st century. In its final section it provides an extended glossary of Bergsonian terms, complete with extensive examples and citations of their use across his texts. The glossary also maps the influence of Bergson's work by including entries on related writers, all of whom Bergson either corresponded with or critiqued.

An Advaitic Modernity?: Raimon Panikkar and Philosophical Theology poses Raimon Panikkar as a stimulating dialogue partner in postmodern philosophical theology who can help us rethink the relationship between transcendence and immanence through an advaitic critique of modernity. Andrew D. Thrasher argues that Panikkar advaitic critique of modernity may transform several discourses, such as how Panikkar’s cosmotheandric metaphysics may reshape a theology of religion and offer a religious interpretation of a relational ontology that builds on the Heideggerian ontological tradition and how Panikkar’s metaphysics solves problems in Heidegger’s ontology.

Drawing on data generated by the EU’s Interests and Recruitment in Science (IRIS) project, this volume examines the issue of young people’s participation in science, technology, engineering and mathematics education. May 5, 2018 marked the 200th anniversary of the birth of Karl Heinrich Marx, German scientist, philosopher, economist, and sociologist. His creative genius created a system-functional model of contemporary society, defined its socio-economic character, and formulated scientific and philosophical approaches for its cognition. Marx also developed methodological clues for identifying and substantiating the economic nature of phenomena, processes and the socio-economic relations that mediate them, which are of critical relevance today. Before Marx, political economy was an eclectic combination of separate theories and concepts espoused by various philosophers. Marx was able to transform the field into a coherent science with a single systemic approach. Today, the generally recognized economic mainstream has no way of explaining in detail the causes of the ongoing global economic crisis. However, it is generally accepted that modern Marxist legacy researchers have advantages in their analyses. They believe that at the start of the 21st century capitalism does not tend to self-destruct. However, its failings are more and more clearly manifested. They believe that the capitalist system has not outlived its weaknesses, and the old bourgeois financiers have not been replaced, as was necessary, by a generation of new leaders armed with new methods of management and capable of coming up with solutions to current problems. The philosophical underpinnings of the capitalist economic system have laid a time bomb under the whole ideology of capitalism. Capitalism as a development system ceases to exist. The truth, which was found in the past writings of Marx, cannot be completely rejected, nor should it be venerated as a museum exhibit. This book is aimed at reactivating fundamental political and economic studies on the rules and functioning of the global geo-economic system from the point of view of a modern interpretation of Karl Marx's concept of objective processes in the conditions of the current systemic crisis of capitalism.
