Amarna Personal Names

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The Amarna letters are foundational documents for the study of Late Bronze Age history and language in the ancient Near East. One of the most significant aspects of these letters has been the discovery of Canaanite influence in the Akkadian language of these letters. This discovery has provided a wealth of linguistic knowledge concerning that period and its influence on subsequent ages. Though much has been written about the Amarna letters, until now there has been no comprehensive study of the personal names found in the cuneiform texts from El-Amarna. Dr. Hess fills the void with this comprehensive reference tool. The main part of the book catalogs the Amarna personal names, providing necessary information for each name, including attested spellings, occurrences, identification, textual notes, and analysis. The author then offers a grammatical analysis of the names and glossaries of the seven languages attested in personal names in the letters. Glossaries of divine name and geographical name elements and an extensive bibliography complete the study. This volume is essential for research libraries and for scholars and students working with the Amarna letters or Akkadian and Northwest Semitic languages.

The Neurons Of The First Optic Ganglion Of The Bee Apis Mellifera

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The visual system of insects has attracted histologists for a long time. We have detailed histological studies of the visual systems of Diptera, Hymenoptera and Odonata dating from the last century: Leydig's (1864) study on optical ganglia of insects, Ciaccio's (1876) on the fine structure of the first ganglion in the mosquitos and Hickson's (1885) giving for the first time an exact description of the three optical ganglia of Musca. From 1896 several papers appeared using neuro histological methods, mainly Golgi techniques and methylene blue staining. In 1896 Kenyon published his work on the bee-brain and in 1897 described the relationships of neurons in the optic ganglia with a modified Golgi method. Another work, by Jonescu (1909), should be mentioned: "Vergleichende Unter suchungen am Gehirn der Honigbiene". In the same year Cajal's findings on the optic ganglia of the fly were published; then in 1915 Cajal and Sanchez wrote a definitive monograph on the neural elements and their connections in the same animal that remained the main reference in this field for decades. In both works Golgi techniques were used. Since then there have been only a few new publications on the subject: (Gribakin, 1967; Perrelet and Baumann, 1969 a, b; Perrelet, 1970; Varela and Porter, 1969; Skrzipek and Skrzipek, 1971, 1973; Grundler, 1972: Snyder, Menzel and Laughlin, 1973). They deal mainly with the receptors of the retina.

The Mechanoreceptors Of The Mammalian Skin Ultrastructure And Morphological Classification

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Whilst most of the senses (hearing, sight, smell and taste) have their own organs, the tactile sense is dependent on the sensory nerve endings of the periph eral processes of the nerve cells in the spinal ganglia. These nerve endings are distributed over the entire body. They vary in number and structure according to the nature of the tissue. For instance, the quantitative innervation of the mucosa differs from the innervation of the periosteum or the articular capsules. The skin and its related tissues are relatively richly innervated, but here too there are regional differences. Some areas, such as the skin of the back, have relatively few nerve endings, whilst other parts (e.g. the skin of the fingers) are richly innervated. Most authors describe the nerve endings systematically from the surface of the epidermis to the lower layers of the dermis. On the basis of the topographical criteria, we differentiate between epidermal and dermal nerve endings.

Vistas For Geodesy In The New Millennium

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

It was in September 1906 that the predecessor of the IAG, the 'Internationale Erdmessung', th organized the 15 General Assembly at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in Budapest. It was 95 years later, in September 2001, that the IAG returned to this beautiful city to hold its Scientific Assembly, IAG 2001, in the historical premises of the Academy. The meeting took place from September 2-7, 2001 and continued the tradition of Scientific Assemblies, started in Tokyo (1982) and continued in Edinburgh (1989), Beijing (1993) and Rio de Janeiro (1997). Held every four years at the midpoint between General Assemblies of the IAG, they focus on giving an integrated view of geodesy to a broad spectrum of researchers and practitioners in geodesy and geophysics. The convenient location of the main building of the Hungarian Academy in downtown Budapest and the superb efforts of the Local Organizing Committee contributed in a major way to the excellent atmosphere of the meeting. As at previous meetings, the scientific part of the program was organized as a series of symposia which, as a whole, gave a broad overview of actual geodetic research activities. To emphasize an integrated view of geodesy, the symposia did not follow the pattern of the IAG Sections, but focussed on current research topics to which several IAG Sections could contribute. Each symposium had 5 sessions with presented papers and poster sessions on two consecutive days.
