Volume One: The Gospels and Acts With typical thoroughness, Dr. Hiebert has produced this volume of his New Testament introductions. Though not a commentary on the gospels and Acts, the book presents their message along with a discussion of such questions as authorship, composition, and the Synoptic problem. Practical suggestions on how to study these five books are included. The bibliographies and annotated book lists are are extremely helpful for pastors, teachers, and laymen. Volume Two: The Pauline Epistles This is a detailed introduction to all of Paul's writings - epistles that without question are among the most precious treasures of the Christian church. Dr. Hiebert discusses the historical circumstances of their writing, deals with ethical problems, and provides helpful general information on the content and nature of the books themselves. Discussed in general and separately, these epistles are treated in chronological order, with emphasis on their eschatology, soteriology, Christology, or ecclesiology.

Bengel's work on the New Testament is a valuable resource for modern students of the Scriptures. In 1734, he published a carefully prepared Greek text of the New Testament with an "Apparatus criticus," which formed the point of departure for modern New Testament textual criticism. His famous canon was: "The more difficult reading is to be preferred." This critical work was followed by an exegetical one, Gnomon Novi Testamenti (Tubingen, 1742). As a brief and suggestive commentary on the New Testament, the Gnomon is still of considerable use today. Bengel's chief principle of interpretation, briefly stated, is to read nothing into the Scriptures, but to draw everything from them, and suffer nothing to remain hidden that is really in them. His Gnomon exerted considerable influence on exegesis in Germany, and John Wesley translated most of its notes and incorporated them into his Annotatory Notes upon the New Testament (London, 1755). Bo Giertz wrote these commentaries in retirement after a lifetime of studying the Greek New Testament. These accompanied his own translations of the New Testament. This volume covers the Gospel of John through to Second Corinthians. The Collected Works of Witness Lee, 1978, volume 2, contains messages given by Brother Witness Lee from May 13 through November 26. After returning to Anaheim, California, from Boston, Massachusetts, in the middle of May, Brother Lee remained in Anaheim through the first week in August. During that time he also ministered in San Diego and Fullerton, California. During the second week in August he traveled to San Jose, Sacramento, Berkeley, and San Francisco, California, and returned to Anaheim for a few days. After the third week in August Brother Lee ministered in Boston, Massachusetts; Washington, D.C.; New York City; Atlanta, Georgia; Miami, Florida; Toronto, Canada; Cleveland, Ohio; and Chicago, Illinois, until the end of the third week in September. He then returned to Anaheim and remained there until the end of the first week in November, after which he visited Spokane and Moses Lake, Washington; Vancouver, Canada; Seattle, Washington; and Dallas, Texas. At the beginning of December he returned to Anaheim and, except for a one-day visit to Irvine, California, remained there until the end of the year. The contents of this volume are divided into eight sections, as follows: 1. Two messages given in Costa Mesa and Irvine, California, on May 15 and 18. These messages are included in this volume under the title Living Christ for the Lord's Recovery. 2. Six messages given in Anaheim, California, on May 13 through June 22. They were previously published as part of a three-volume set containing messages given by Brother Lee during the years 1978 and 1979. The messages in this volume were previously published in a forty-one-chapter book entitled Life Messages, volume 1, and are included here under the same title.
