Edward L. Bond offers a reappraisal of religion's place in the colonies, fully chronicling as well as contextualizing the practice of religion and church activities in early America. The addition of previously unpublished and largely unexamined sermons shapes a picture of colonial Virginia's religious environment that is unparalleled in both depth and scope The book vastly enriches our appreciation not only of the texts, but also of their writers and the important role these clergymen played in shaping the young nation.

St. ThomasΓ Parish in Virginia was formed from St. MarkΓ s Parish in 1740. The new parish encompassed present-day Orange, Greene, and a strip of southern Madison counties. Based on an extensive examination of primary sources, the work at hand is the first accurate description of the formation of St. ThomasΓ Parish, its member churches, its ministers, and others who played a significant part in its colonial history. In the absence of surviving vestry books for St. ThomasΓ Parish, or even an accurate map of the parish, the author was able to extract valuable information pertaining to St. ThomasΓ Parish from the surviving vestry books of the neighboring parishes of St. MarkΓ s and St. GeorgeΓ s. However, as Mrs. Papageorgiou explains in her Preface, Spotsylvania and Orange County road orders comprise the backbone of her study. The road orders for the construction and maintenance of roads, as recorded in county court order books, provide evidence to the existence of churches and chapels throughout the parish. The road ordersΓ value to the genealogist is that they identify the overseers and work crews assigned to maintain the road and any bridges along it. So, for example, the road orders tell us that, between November 1, 1726, and April 2, 1734, John Rucker, Thomas Jackson, Joseph Hawkins, Abraham Bledsoe, Henry Downes, John Davis, and George Eastham all served as overseers of roads near Southwest Mountain Chapel in St. ThomasΓ Parish. This work is an excellent example of historical reconstruction. The Introduction explains how, when, and why St. ThomasΓ was established from its parent and grandparent parishes, St. MarkΓ s and St. GeorgeΓ s. Next, the author uses the road orders and other sources to pinpoint the timing and location of each of the following places of worship: Germana Church, Southwest Mountain Chapel, Southwest Mountain Church, Upper Chapel, St. ThomasΓ Parish, Upper Church, Middle (Brick) Church, Pine Stake Church, and New (Orange) Church. (Mrs. Papageorgiou has also appended a number of important court orders at the back of the volume.) The third chapter gives the tenure of every parish minister and his family members. The final chapter recounts how previous writers--notably Bishop William Meade and Philip Slaughter--have recorded the history of St. ThomasΓ Parish and where, more often than not, they went astray. Students of Virginia church history will welcome the comprehensive bibliography that follows the appendices.

This comprehensive survey of British colonial governors' houses and buildings used as state houses or capitols in the North American colonies begins with the founding of the Virginia Colony and ends with American independence. In addition to the 13 colonies that became the United States in 1783, the study includes three colonies in present-day Florida and Canada--East Florida, West Florida and the Province of Quebec--obtained by Great Britain after the French and Indian War.

J. Gresham Machen, a pastor and scholar, set an example for us one hundred years ago to this day. Most famous for his 1923 book Christianity and Liberalism, Machen fought the good fight of faith at the expense of his own reputation—risking it all for the sake of advancing the gospel of Jesus Christ. His story encourages us to move forward with the peace of Christ and a heart of faith-filled obedience to him who loved us and gave himself for us, and to fight the good fight of faith in spite of great odds. This discussion guide serves as a companion to The Life I Now Live: Continuing Machen’s Historic Battle for the Gospel. The Life I Now Live is about defending the Christian Faith in such a critical time in history. It is obvious that Deconstructionism and Postmodernism have ravaged the Evangelical Church in America—especially over the past two decades. So how do men and women like you and I rightly safeguard and serve the Church in such turbulent times? The Life I Now Live answers this question for us by accentuating the need for discipleship that understands the vital importance of apologetics, church history, and evangelism. Many pastors, teachers, and ministry leaders feel the need for holistic discipleship that engages the heart and mind. They may desire to lead a study on apologetics, church history, and evangelism, but they simply don’t know where to begin. This discussion guide will help you facilitate crucial conversations regarding the Christian Faith. Each chapter contains a brief summary to refresh your memory, a set of questions for small group discussion, guided prayers, and pictures, in addition to supplementary texts and resources.
