BOOK EXCERPT:
"This book builds on recent anthropological work to explore the social and cultural dynamics of cemetery practice and its transformation over generations in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley. Anthropologist Alison Bell finds that people are using material culture-images and epitaphs on grave markers, as well as objects they leave on graves-to assert and maintain relationships and fight against alienation. She draws on fieldwork, interviews, archival sources, and disciplinary insights to show how cemeteries both reveal and participate in the grassroots cultural work of crafting social connections, assessing the transcendental durability of the deceased person, and asserting particular cultural values. The book's chapters range across cemetery types, focusing on African American burials, grave sites of institutionalized individuals, and modern community memorials"--

BOOK EXCERPT:
The Divine MIracle is a science fiction fantasy partially based on 2 movies and a tv comedy show. The rest of the book comes from the active imagination of the author. The author had ideas for the novel for years but decided to put his ideas on paper after the death of an uncle in 2007. The Divine Miracle has many elements including comedy, drama, action and adventure. This is the first book in a four part series. Tevin Evans is an ordinary 12 year old African-American boy living in Indiana in the year 1983. He attends an predominately white elementary school and he is the only black boy and no girls will really talk to him or even consider being his girlfriend. But that changes when he is struck down and nearly killed by a supernautural event on the playground. Several months later girls everywhere are fighting for his attention after he gains the ability to fly like a bird without wings. His whole body later changes down to the subatomic level and then other boys start coming after him for affection as well as girls. Tevin is confused by all the attention and the changes his body went through but he eventually understands. An youthfull looking adult Tevin living in the late twenty-first century tells the story of how his whole life changed and made him a trans-gendered superhero and gave him superhuman children from his marrage to a man.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The politics in 2160 Jamaica never became what it intended, it changed. Escaping poverty was island peoples' dream but in Troy's eyes he saw tyranny. Now a growing dynasty has forged Kingston into a commercial hub for the world and Jamrock into a tourism centrepiece. It was just politics, the League's standard became a new thought and Jamaica is now an archaic concept. But energy lurks deep within the mountains and Divine Right still exist. Though League politics cloud Troy’s mind, Jamaican dreams echo across the oceans into time and space. And only his journey back to Kingston can restore his consciousness. His gifts are tested and thrusting his awoken memories into the reality of his time will only show the depth of his blood. But his reality brings a battlefield of decisions. Troy's Jamaica is in crisis and the memories of his ancestors, once cloaked, now reveal a blissful island nightmare.

BOOK EXCERPT:
'An absolute must-read' VANITY FAIR Bette Davis and Joan Crawford: two of the deadliest arch-rivals of all time. Born in the same year (though Davis swore 'Crawford is five years older than me if she's a day'), the two fought bitterly throughout their long and brilliant Hollywood careers. Joan became a star first, which always irked her rival, who suggested her success had come via the casting couch. 'It sure as hell beats the hard cold floor' was Crawford's scathing response. According to Davis, Crawford was not only a nymphomaniac but also 'vain, jealous and about as stable and trustworthy as a basket of snakes'. Crawford, in turn, accused Davis of stealing her glory and planning to destroy her. The two rivals fought over as many men as they did parts - when Bette fell in love with her co-star in DANGEROUS, Franchot Tone, Joan stepped in and married him. The women worked together only once, in the classic thriller WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE?, in which their violent hatred of each other as rival sisters was no act. 'Shaun Considine's story of the two divas is vastly informative and in parts hilarious' SUNDAY TELEGRAPH 'Fascinating and vastly entertaining . . . all you want is more' TIME OUT 'Considine's well-researched book is an account of one of Hollywood's most extraordinary relationships' DAILY EXPRESS '[A] Scurrilously readable twin biography' MAIL ON SUNDAY 'Considine's dual biography is a guilty pleasure' SUNDAY HERALD 'Brilliant, outrageous and hysterical' Suranne Jones (Star of BBC One's Doctor Foster)
