Meddling In The Ballot Box

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Why do world powers sometimes try to determine who wins an election in another country? What effects does such meddling have on the targeted elections results? Great powers have attempted for centuries to intervene in elections occurring in other states through various covert and overt methods, with the American intervention in the 2013 Kenyan elections and the Russian intervention in the 2016 US elections being just two recent examples. Indeed, the Americans and the Soviets/Russians intervened in one out of every nine national-level executive elections between 1946 and 2000. Meddling in the Ballot Box is the first book to provide a comprehensive analysis of foreign meddling in elections from the dawn of the modern era to the 2016 Russian intervention in the US election. Dov Levin shows that partisan electoral interventions are usually an "inside job" occurring only if a significant domestic actor within the target wants it. Likewise, a great power will not intervene unless it fears that its interests are endangered by an opposing party or candidate with very different preferences. He also finds that partisan electoral interventions frequently have significant effects on the results--sufficient in many situations to determine the winner. Such interference also tends to be more effective when it is conducted overtly. However, it is usually ineffective, if not counterproductive, when done in a founding election. A revelatory account that explains why major powers have meddled so frequently across the entire postwar era, Meddling in the Ballot Box also provides us with a framework for assessing the cyber-future of interference.

The Bullet And The Ballot Box

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The Bullet and the Ballot Box offers a rich and sweeping account of a decade of revolutionary upheaval. When Nepal's Maoists launched their armed rebellion in the nineties, they had limited public support and many argued that their ideology was obsolete. Twelve years later they were in power, and their ambitious plan of social transformation dominated the national agenda. How did this become possible? Adhikari's narrative draws on a broad range of sources - including novels, letters and diaries - to illuminate the history and human drama of the Maoist revolution. An indispensible account of Nepal's recent history, the book offers a fascinating case study of how communist ideology has been reinterpreted and translated into political action in the twenty-first century.

The Power Of The Ballot

Elections in India have been a stable and impressive feature of the country's political landscape. They provide the voiceless, the disempowered and the poorest the right to vote, equally with the mightiest, the richest and the most influential. And Indian political parties are surpassed by those of no other country in electioneering skill, dramatic presentation of issues, political oratory, or mastery of political psychology. In the decades after Independence, democracy in India has been confronted with various challenges, including radicalism, ultra-Left-wing activism, external threats and the vicissitudes of the polity or economy. The year 2020-21 brought an unprecedented challenge in the form of an unseen, unknown and silent enemy, the SARS-Cov 2 virus, that had to be fought simultaneously while upholding the democratic process of elections. The Power of the Ballot narrates the saga of Indian elections with stories ranging from digitisation of voting and the constant struggle with the malpractices to holding elections during pandemic.

The Election Of Ideologies

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

With Barack Obama chosen as the new President Elect, it is very important to become informed on the ideologies, mindsets, and beliefs that will guide Obama's Presidency and dominate his principles. My book explains information about the United States Government relevant to United States Citizens. I am an American and wish to uphold the ideals of freedom within the walls of the United States of America. Those values are very important to protect and uphold. True Conservatism is in revival mode in the United States right now, and I am one of many trying to resuscitate it. Conservatism is a unique and interesting branch of philosophy-based ideological preferences for the world, for government, and for society. While Conservatism is still a major contender in the political climate of any election in America, Conservatism needs a revival from the current constraints put on it by the Republican Party. I promote Conservatism of Capitalism, Freedom, Liberty, the Constitution, and the Declaration of Independence. This book is written from that perspective and encompasses a viewpoint not generally portrayed on Television or in the mainstream. Americans, in the wake of an Obama Presidency, should yearn for more knowledge on the man that will guide our country for the next four years. Only with knowledge can we pursue goals. Everyone knows this. I bring facts into this book that have been discussed in very few other media outlets (the coverup going on only begins with Obama, it also encompasses the Democratic Congress who has failed to impose any substantial, helpful legislation).
