Educator Patti Lather and psychologist Chris Smithies observed and chronicled support groups for women diagnosed with HIV. Whether black, Latina, poor, or middle class, the women in these groups share the common bond of living with HIV/AIDS, and they describe how it affects their lives in terms full of practical reality and moving poignancy, as they fight the disease, accept, reflect, live and die with and in it.

BOOK EXCERPT:
In The New Age of Soul, the broad appeal of new age spirituality is identified and defined, with special attention to the claim that the soul may be understood as both the repository of divine energy and a source of spiritual healing and hope. Through dialogue with sources and perspectives on the spiritual nature of the soul, the book attempts to win the respect and appreciation of the reader already persuaded by the claims and benefits of new age spirituality while, at the same time, convincing the reader who has suspicions and concerns about new age spirituality that a better alternative may be found. The book thus has a two fold purpose: first, to expose the inadequacy, indeed, the superficiality of new age spirituality through this dialogue and discussion attracting the attention and interest of the reader already influenced by this genre. Second, the author makes a case for a more traditional, orthodox, and biblical view of the soul and human spirituality so that the reader who is inclined toward new age spirituality will rediscover the more traditional biblical content of the soul and spirituality while providing the committed, more traditional Christian reader a tool by which to communicate a biblical faith with the growing segment of our population attracted toward new age spirituality. In its own way, this book is an apologetic for a more traditional Christian theology of human spirituality and self identity presented in a positive dialogue with new age spirituality

BOOK EXCERPT:
A collection of personal stories, history, poetry, and art A Land With a People is a book of stories, photographs and poetry which elevates rarely heard Palestinian and Jewish voices and visions. Eloquently framed with a foreword by the dynamic Palestinian legal scholar and activist, Noura Erakat, this book began as a storytelling project of Jewish Voice for Peace-New York City and subsequently transformed into a theater project performed throughout the New York City area. Stories touch hearts, open minds, and transform our understanding of the “other”—as well as our comprehension of own roles and responsibilities— and A Land With a People emerges from this reckoning. It brings us the narratives of secular, Muslim, Christian, and queer Palestinians who endure the particular brand of settler colonialism known as Zionism. It relays the transformational journeys of Ashkenazi, Mizrahi, queer, and Palestinian Jews who have come to reject the received Zionist narrative. Unflinching in their confrontation of the power dynamics that underlie their transformation process, these writers find the courage to face what has happened to historic Palestine, and to their own families as a result. Contextualized by a detailed historical introduction and timeline charting 150 years of Palestinian and Jewish resistance to Zionism, this collection will stir emotions, provoke fresh thinking, and point to a more hopeful, loving future—one in which Palestine/Israel is seen for what it is in its entirety, as well as for what it can be.

BOOK EXCERPT:
This book is a metaphorical toast to the process of showing up in life and how whole-person formation takes place when people allow themselves to be fully present. To Showing Up includes essays about common areas of life in all of their beauty, pain, and awkwardness. As people show up in spaces that are both familiar and unfamiliar, they are formed not only by their presence and the presence of those around them but also by the Presence of God in beauty, brokenness, and everything in-between. To Showing Up is both a story about showing up and a challenge to continue to do so.

BOOK EXCERPT:
He asked her to be his wife, a mother to the children—and before the night was through…possibly his widow Quinn McClure had no right to show up on her doorstep after five years, looking sexy and desperate, with two tiny orphaned children in tow, asking her for an impossible favor. And yet, one look in Quinn's eyes, and her heart answered yes before she knew it. Quinn knew that if something happened to him before he could find his brother's killer, at least he could see that Hope and the children were safe. But being with Hope again reminded him of the wasted years they'd spent apart. Now with a killer on their heels, Quinn had to stay alive for the children—and for Hope, who loved him as only a true wife could…
