BOOK EXCERPT:

ISSN: 2397-9607 Issue 311 In this 311th issue of the Baba Indaba’s Children's Stories series, Baba Indaba narrates the Fairy Tale "THE AXE, THE DRUM, THE BOWL, AND THE DIAMOND”. ONCE upon a time, Snow-White and Rose-Red were two little girls living with their mother, a poor widow, in a small cottage by the woods. Fair-haired Snow-White is quiet and shy and prefers to spend her time indoors, doing housework and reading. Dark-haired Rose-Red is outspoken, lively and cheerful, and prefers to be outside. They are both very good little girls who love each other and their mother dearly, and their mother is very fond of them as well. One winter night, there is a knock at the door. Rose Red opens the door to find a bear. At first, she is terrified, but the bear tells her not to be afraid. "I'm half frozen and I merely want to warm up a little at your place," he says. They let the bear in, and he lies down in front of the fire. Snow-White and Rose-Red beat the snow off the bear, and they quickly become quite friendly with him. They play with the bear and roll him around playfully. They let the bear spend the night in front of the fire. In the morning, he leaves trotting out into the woods. The bear comes back every night for the rest of that winter and the family grows used to him. When summer comes, the bear tells them that he must go away for a while to guard his treasure from a wicked dwarf. During the summer, when the girls are walking through the forest, they find a dwarf whose beard is stuck in a tree. Well, are they able to rescue the dwarf, and what of the Bear? Do they have to go through another winter before all the secrets are revealed, or will they be revealed by the end of winter? To find the answers to these questions, and others you may have, you will have to download and read this story to find out! Snow White And Rose Red

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The dwarf glared at the girls with his red fiery eyes and shouted, “What are you standing there for? Can you not come over here and help me?” As different as winter and summer, Snow White and Rose Red are as devoted to each other as sisters can be. One night, an unexpected visitor knocks at the door of their cottage, where they live cosily with their mother, and a half-frozen large black bear asks for a warm place to rest. Initially afraid of him, the girls soon befriend him and he becomes their playfellow throughout the winter nights. When spring arrives, the bear heads off into the forest to guard his treasures from wicked dwarfs, who live underground and emerge from their caves when the earth has thawed and who have one ambition in mind—to steal. A short while after the bear’s departure, the girls encounter a dwarf in distress and stop to help him, but there is more to him than meets the eye… Alongside this tale by the Brothers Grimm is The Ungrateful Dwarf, the 1818 folktale by Karoline Stahl, upon which Wilhelm Grimm drew inspiration for Snow White and Rose Red. Both tales are presented in this book, newly translated into English. [Folklore Type: ATU-426 (The Two Girls, the Bear, and the Dwarf)]

Shakespeare And Visual Culture

BOOK EXCERPT:

Statues coming to life and lively portraits ready to breathe in Shakespeare? This new volume re-assesses the key role played by visual culture in his drama and poetry by providing readers with an up-to-date guide to the main publications on the subject as well as offering a synthesis on the main literary and historical sources for inspiration. While scrutinising the complex issue of image on an Elizabethan stage and exploring the codification of colours in Shakespeare's poetry, this dictionary highlights the fierce rivalry between the poet, the dramatist and the visual artist. This volume will be of great interest and value to students of Shakespeare, students of art history or anyone working on the interdisciplinary subject of literature and art.
