Global Transition is an innovative study that analyses the problems and prospects of the Third World by building on the theoretical contribution - the dynamic-strategy model - made in the author's acclaimed Longrun Dynamics . This book addresses global and subnational issues concerning the world's forests, societies, and environment from an independent and non-governmental point of view. There are several - partly intermingled - evolutionary forest transitions underway: the slow transition from forest area decrease to an increase in the North while deforestation and degradation continues in the South. Although not all deforestation is considered negative, serious social, economic, and environmental costs may be associated with excessive deforestation. Deforestation control is just the first step on the stony path towards sustainable forest management. The forest management transition refers to the shift in the utilization towards managed semi-natural, secondary forests and plantation forests. There are some signs in the North of the forest paradigm shift from sustainable yield to forest ecosystem concepts. How deforestation can be tackled and how these concurrent transitions are effected will have profound implications for the future. These processes involve several challenges with South-North dimensions. A search for an optimum mix of public policies and markets is a global priority both as a forest policy issue and as an inter-sectoral item on the political agenda. Deforestation and transition is discussed here by a team of 14 scientists from both the North and the South. This book examines the planning of cities in global transition, looking at Australia’s Greater Sydney as a case example. The focus is on metropolitan districts (groups of municipalities) within the Greater Sydney region. The subjects of global transition and sustainable urban planning (SUP) are introduced in Chapter 1. How Greater Sydney approaches planning of its region and its districts is then outlined in Chapter 2. In this chapter, three case study districts are selected for critiquing planning in the face of population and new development changes. The districts, beyond the City of Sydney, are: Sydney Inner West, Greater Parramatta and St George. The book further outlines a methodology to assess planning practices within each of the municipalities (twelve case study municipalities in all within the three districts). This book treats different themes which are intrinsically linked and of extreme significance for the entire global community such as the necessity to cut emissions and transit toward a more sustainable and green economy. The content extends to the urgency to shape a new multilateralism and reinforce cooperation to achieve global goods, where the environment comes first, to the green finance which will play a fundamental role for the green transition paying particular attention to the United Nations' 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.A particular emphasis is given to the so-called 'Dual Circulation Strategy' (DCS) which is presently becoming the priority not only for China but also for the rest of the global community. Due to the uncertainties caused by the pandemic and other external factors, China has substituted GDP growth with the so-called six guarantees (liù bǎo 六保) which represent the six fundamental aspects of the economy and society that according to the central government must receive priority attention, and protection in economic policy to ensure economic recovery. China also introduced the concept of an 'ecological civilization' (shēngtài wénmíng 生态文明) through green, low-carbon economic development. One of the targets is to achieve carbon neutrality before 2060, though the rest of the global community and in particular the European Union with its Green Deal, and the US with its renewed climate policies, are pushing to reach this objective in 2050.In order to grant all these developments, 'green finance' plays a fundamental role for the success of this green transition. Therefore, a substantial part of this book explores the many aspects surrounding this theme.
