BOOK EXCERPT:
Writing ‘Master Class’ is a biography of David Pownall’s play, Master Class (1983), from conception to coming of age. Threaded through the account of the inception and development of the piece are twists of authorial life-story necessary for the telling. Whereas a novel or poem can be kept a secret until it is properly finished, a play has to go out to meet the people early. On the day the script is put into the hands of actors, the soul of the thing passes out of the author's control. It can be bent, battered, warped – or improved within its being far beyond expectations. As a drama of dictatorship in art and the cleverness needed to evade its worst manifestations, Master Class has been at large for thirty years, produced in twenty countries, in some several times. What has been done to it, how it has fared, is touched upon but the main story in this book is the making of the piece. A fascinating insight into the playwright’s craft.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Orgyan Chokyi (1675-1729) spent her life in Dolpo, the highest inhabited region of the Nepal Himalayas. Illiterate and expressly forbidden by her master to write her own life story, Orgyan Chokyi received divine inspiration to compose one of the most forthright and engaging spiritual autobiographies of the Tibetan literary tradition. Her life story is the oldest of only four Tibetan autobiographies authored by women. It is also a rare example of writing by a pre-modern Buddhist woman, and thus holds a unique place in Buddhist literature as a whole. Translator Kurtis Schaeffer prefaces the text with an illuminating study of the life and times of Orgyan Chokyi and an extended analysis of the hermitess's view of the relation between gender, suffering, and liberation. Based almost entirely on primary Tibetan documents never before translated, this fascinating book will be of interest to those studying Buddhism, gender and religion, and the culture of the Tibetan world.

Filled with insights from leading Australian CEOs, Master CEOs taps into the thoughts of Australia's leading chief executive officers or managing directors in an effort to understand why they are such outstanding leaders, and why the companies they run have delivered above-average results. Master CEOs is not only about management — it also delivers a very strong message on leadership. To be interviewed for the book, the CEO had to be in charge of their company for at least 10 years and delivered shareholders a return greater than the share market in that period. CEOs covered include: Gerry Harvey from Harvey Norman, Paul Little from Toll Holdings, Graham Turner from Flight Centre, David Simmons from Hills Industries and many more. All new interviews, never before published.
