My Dear Spencer

BOOK EXCERPT:

Between 1894 and 1903, outback postmaster Frank Gillen wrote to the Melbourne University academic Baldwin Spencer. Gillen, a self-educated enthusiast, died in 1912, having partnered Spencer in pioneering fieldwork to record the culture and beliefs of the Aboriginal people. These letters provide a background to their books, which profoundly influenced theories on the development of human society. The letters shed light on race relations, social conditions and Aboriginal culture in Central Australia. They also document a poorly-understood period in the history of anthropology.

I Spy

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

'I Spy' is an adventure-mystery novel written by Natalie Sumner Lincoln. The story is set in World War I, when the allied forces, English and French, had been bent backward day by day, until it seemed as if Paris was fairly within the Germans' grasp. Bent indeed, but never broken, and with the turning of the tide the Allied line had rushed forward, and France breathed again. Two men, seated in a room of the United Service Club in London one gloomy afternoon in November, 1914, talked over the situation in tones too low to reach other ears. The older man, Sir Percival Hargraves, had been bemoaning the fact that England seemed honeycombed by the German Secret Service, and his nephew, John Hargraves, an officer in uniform, was attempting to reassure him. It was a farewell meeting, for the young officer was returning to the front.

Selected Letters Of Sir J G Frazer

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This is a fully annotated edition of selected letters by (and in some cases to) Sir J. G. Frazer (1854-1941), the eminent anthropologist, classicist, and historian of religion. Frazer was read by virtually everyone working in those fields in the first third of the twentieth century. His great work, The Golden Bough, offered a grand vision of humanity's mental and spiritual evolution - from vain attempts to compel the gods to do our bidding (which Frazer called magic) through equally vain attempts to propitiate the gods through prayer and sacrifice (his characterization of religion) to rationality and science. His richly varied correspondence with prominent figures such as Edmund Gosse, A. E. Housman, and Bronislaw Malinowski, among others, offers an unparalleled insight into British intellectual life of the time, and also throws light upon the composition of The Golden Bough itself.
