BOOK EXCERPT:

Delia Garcia exhibited her leadership skills at the age of 13, when she organized the first Youth American GI Forum Chapter in Wichita, Kansas, where she was born and raised. She went on to become the first Latina—and youngest woman—elected to the Kansas legislature in 2004 and the first Latina appointed Secretary of Labor in her home state. The recipient of numerous awards and accolades, Garcia gathers “Top Ten Leadership Lessons” from 50 high-achieving women. This “who’s who” of movers-and-shakers contains representatives from government, corporate and non-profit worlds. While each woman’s unique experiences and heritage are reflected in her advice, there are several recommendations that made many of the lists, such as the importance of believing in oneself, the need to mentor and be mentored, remembering one’s roots, embracing change and taking care of one’s physical and emotional needs. Contributors come from every region of the country, and include Dr. Victoria M. DeFrancesco Soto, the dean of the Clinton School of Public Service at the University of Arkansas, a contributor to NBC News and a political analyst for Telemundo; Yulin Cruz Soto, the former mayor of San Juan, Puerto Rico, who dealt with the devastating aftermath of Hurricane Maria; Hilda Solis, former US Secretary of Labor and California state senator and congresswoman; and Maria “Gaby” Pacheco, a young immigrant rights advocate who spearheaded the efforts that led to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. This powerful and intriguing collection introduces an impressive group of women who have reached the pinnacle of success in their work, despite having to overcome obstacles related to gender, ethnicity and sometimes immigration status.

Leadership Lessons 10 Keys To Success In Life And Business

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Achievers - the masters, innovators, and great ones - do not owe their success to luck, birth, or environment. Rather, great achievers throughout history - from Michelangelo to Einstein, Madame Curie to Bill Gates, Colonel Sanders to General Eisenhower - all have characteristics that the authors have distilled into actions for extraordinary success - in any field. In the process, some old notions are put to rest - including the saw that innovators must be risk takers (in fact, they not) and that great ideas just happen. This book ranges from the importance of preparing for success (acquiring expertise) to endurance against obstacles and recognizing and then seizing opportunities. None of it is easy, they say, but the rewards can be substantial. This fascinating book will be especially helpful for senior executives, ambitious managers, and entrepreneurs; many will find the clarity of its prose and sometimes surprising relevance of the examples and keys inspirational.

Leadership Lessons From Comprehensive School Reforms

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The process of understanding a text from the narrator s point of view is crucial for the tasks of interpreting and translating the Bible. If the translator s understanding of a narrative from the narrator s point of view is erroneous, then the whole process of translating the message into another language may also fall into error. This poses Bible translators a difficult challenge: How can we understand the narrator s point of view of the biblical stories which are culturally, geographically, and historically remote from our own? Understanding a text from the narrator s point of view must precede the translation process. In this work Hankore presents an argument for the intended utterance of Genesis 28:10 35:15 before proposing in brief how to translate it. By following this process, Hankore shows that a correct understanding of the concept of the ancient Israelite vow in the framework of a social institution is fundamental to reading and translating Genesis 28:10 35:15, and goes on to show how this same votive framework assist an explanation of the relevance of Genesis 34 to the Jacob story.
