The word Hero is a very complex term and it has evolved over time. A Hero can be someone whom inspires others to do a common good for themselves and others in their community. One that sets high standards for himself or herself. Someone who’s deeds and accomplishments are worthy of praise by others. One that overcame tremendous odds against them and inspired others to do the same. They are people whom are not afraid to stand up for what they believe is right. Someone whom helps when the benefit and praise is knowingly going to someone else. Admiral turned author Charles Lockwood (Sink 'Em All, Hellcats of the Sea) brilliantly recreates events as they happened, including the heroic efforts to rescue the men and ships. In his view, the cause of the tragedy lay in the interpretation of the differences that exist between the classic concepts of naval regulations and the stark realism of the unwritten code of destroyer doctrine to follow the leader.

The year following my diagnosis of breast cancer, having a total mastectomy and chemotherapy, I felt as if I was out at sea in the midst of a storm.The faster I ran from the darkness and turmoil the closer it came. I was frightened but I learned to depend on the energy of the Universe. I realized that the quickest way to the light was to go directly into the darkness and face my fears. Accepting my new body image was very difficult, along with not being able to respond to my husband touch. Due to my insecurities, low self-esteem and self-confidence I placed my marriage in jeporady. Learning to rediscover myself was difficult.I learned to trust in the positive energy of the Universe to help me heal. Depending on myself only led me further away from where I wanted to go. I needed to allow God and His angels to take me in their hands and carry me. Depending on the power of the Universe established inner strength and courage to be a survivor. We have a choice in how we react and respond to situations, lessons that life presents to us. Learning to let go of certain feeling and situations is difficult but it makes each day more peaceful and comfortable. Learning there is life after breast cancer is a difficult journey. Everything happens for a reason and it is up to us to learn from the lessons which are presented to us. You can be a survivor when you accept that being a survivor is a state of mind which is dictated by you and not others. Realizing that guilt and shame is wasted energy, and that you are still loved and can love others. Everyone's path in recover and rediscovery will be different and the rate in which we achieve it will be different. What worked for me may not work for you. We cannot compare oursleves to others. We are individuals with different childhood experiences, different backgrounds, personalities and with different suppport systems. I hope that "Journey to New Beginnings" gives you a sense of comfort and hope. Sharing my journey has helped me heal. Each year will be another path of learning, experiencing the joys of living and life - enjoying the extraordinary in the ordinary.

My youngest son, Sam, hands me a DVD converted from a video recording taken years ago. Apprehensive, I slide it into a laptop and watch the scene from my past come to life. After viewing only part of it, he exits to do homework, pauses, and quips, What happened to you, Mom? Time suspends as I search for a reply. Life life happened, Sama lot of life. Like your dad dying and you and I ending up with a genetic disorder. Muscle biopsies, spinal taps, surgeries, you know. Crazy stuff happened. He looks my way only somewhat understanding. His seventeen-year-old, senior-in-high-school self tries on my explanation, but it doesnt quite fit. He cant give in so why should I? He continues up the stairs and I stand alone. Alone with the reality that the hard stuff is winning. That I caved under the pressure. That my tall, blond-haired, blue-eyed son knows who I was, compared to who I am.

A full cup must be carried steadily; in many regards, my cup has overflowed with blessings. I lived most of my life as a public figure, but the most important things I have accomplished were in the shadows when I was alone and could ponder life's meaning. I have endeavored to tell my story with the facts and dates while blending enough narrative to make the journey through these pages enjoyable. Come walk with me through the pages of my life from child to man; from son to parent; from an Army Private washing dishes to a Commanding Brigadier General; from student to teacher; from a sinner lost to a sinner saved. I have been a servant of humanity, a helpmate to one woman, a father, a grandfather, and best of all a friend to God. Enjoy the trip; it is my gift to you.
