African American historian Gerald Early refers to Jack Johnson (1878-1946), the first African American heavyweight champion of the world, as the first African American pop culture icon. Johnson is a seminal and iconic figure in the history of race and sport in America. This manuscript is the translation of a memoir by Johnson that was published in French, has never before been translated, and is virtually unknown. Originally published as a series of articles in 1911 and then in revised form as a book in 1914, it covers Johnson's colorful life and battles, both inside and outside the ring, up until and including his famous defeat of Jim Jeffries in Reno, on July 4, 1910. In addition to the fights themselves, the memoir recounts, among many other things, Johnson's brief and amusing career as a local politician in Galveston, Texas; his experience hunting kangaroos in Australia; and his epic bouts of seasickness. It includes portraits of some of the most famous boxers of the 1900-1915 era—such truly legendary figures as Joe Choynski, Jim Jeffries, Sam McVey, Bob Fitzsimons, Philadelphia Jack O'Brien, and Stanley Ketchel. Johnson comments explicitly on race and the color line in boxing and in American society at large in ways that he probably would not have in a publication destined for an American reading public. The text constitutes genuinely new, previously unavailable material and will be of great interest for the many readers intrigued by Jack Johnson. In addition to providing information about Johnson's life, it is a fascinating exercise in self-mythologizing that provides substantial insights into how Johnson perceived himself and wished to be perceived by others. Johnson's personal voice comes through clearly-brash, clever, theatrical, and invariably charming. The memoir makes it easy to see how and why Johnson served as an important role model for Muhammad Ali and why so many have compared the two.

TITLE: THE DARKNESS OF 10,000 STARS AUTHOR: JOHN J. ENSMINGER, PhD. “Meet Arthur Banks, a wise gentleman, nearly 80, retired Navy chaplain, who has been a friend to George Farmer and his sons all his life.” “However, after George passed away, Arthur experienced a long absence from the Farmer family, and he is stunned, when, suddenly, he receives a phone call from Nick Farmer, George’s youngest son, and his godson.” “Although Nick has called primarily to say hello to his old friend, he’s expressed to Arthur that he’s having a serious health problem, and that he, his wife and children now reside up on the coast highway in a small town called Sinnerville. Nick is coming down to ‘Frisco for some tests the following week and he may be able to stop and see Arthur.” “Although Arthur was gladly anticipating Nick’s visit, nothing ever came of it. Therefore, Arthur telephones Nick to plan a trip to Sinnerville to meet his family and visit Nick about his illness." “Arthur makes the 5 1⁄2 trip to Sinnerville and learns that everything appears to be fine with Nick and his family. Nick’s problem seems to stem from something terrible going on at the Post Office, where he works, but Arthur feels sure things will all settle down and work out. He promises his constant support and prayers, whatever happens.” “However, a few days later, while Arthur has been home, he receives another sudden call, this time from Nick’s wife, Darlene, whom he has just met. She wants Arthur to return ASAP, as Nick is reportedly acting suicidal.” “With tremendous concern, Arthur advises Darlene to remove all the weapons from the property, if she can do so safely.. and he promises to return as soon as he can work out his travel plans.” “When he does return to Sinnerville, Nick’s health had visibly declined; he is in a dark, confused mood. Nick attempts to explain what’s been going on at work, but it all seems quite unbelievable. However, Darlene agrees that it is exactly as her husband has said. Therefore, Arthur plans to look into the matter on their behalf, if they’ll allow it.” **** “This is a story of friendship, hope and courage, as Nick and Darlene’s fates unravel before our eyes. Arthur learns something about evil from the small town of Sinnerville and its people; but in spite of them, he carries on to act courageously, to try to help, and later, to try to locate and rescue, his lifelong friend, and his family. You may wish you had a friend like Arthur Banks, who is persistent to the end. You may wish you had his courage and his grit,in difficult times."

Since 1949, when Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Max Frankel began to write for The New York Times, readers have looked to his work as a lens through which they could witness America's role in a rapidly changing world. In this vivid and unforgettable memoir, Frankel chronicles the times of his extraordinary life as he experienced them...within the context of the news stories that defined an era. A quintessentially American story, The Times of My Life traces Frankel's riveting personal relationship with history...his harrowing escape from Nazi Germany...his life as an immigrant on the streets of New York...and his extraordinary half-century-long career at The Times. In a rich first-person account that moves from Hitler's Berlin to Cold War Moscow, from Castro's Havana to the newsroom of America's most influential newspaper, this powerful, compelling work interweaves Frankel's personal and professional lives with the era's greatest stories, from Sputnik to the Pentagon Papers to the collapse of the Berlin Wall. And it reveals Frankel's fascinating off-the-record encounters with Nikita Khrushchev, Henry Kissinger, John Kennedy, Richard Nixon, and a host of other history-makers who shaped their times--and ours. Guiding readers through Hitler's Berlin, Khrushchev's Moscow, Castro's Havana, and the Washington of Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon, THE TIMES OF MY LIFE reevaluates the Cold War, and interweaves Frankel's personal and professional life with the greatest stories of the era. Cycling and Prolifics in Life at 10,000 Miles By: Richard L. Sleder In the United States, bicycle commuting has seen a fifty percent increase in the past ten years. Cycling as a means of fun and convenient transport, improved strength and wellness, and as a force for benefiting and improving our society for our children and grandchildren, is empowering and can be a source of pride, honor, and moral strength, and fortitude. Unfortunately, politics is trying to put the brakes on cycling. The current administration recently removed White House bike racks and continues to ignore critical global warming facts. It ignores smart science that would ensure our continued prosperity and happiness in the short-term as well as long-term. Throughout this book, Richard L. Sleder describes the world he discovers on two wheels. He sees riding as a means to more mobility, independent production and reconnecting with the world around us. The benefits are numerous. Including thoughts and insights, the author also shares journal entries and letters he’s written to improve his path and the path for those around him.

A “hilarious” (Dax Shepard), “surprisingly emotional trip” (The Chainsmokers) through deep American subcultures ranging from Burning Man to Alcoholics Anonymous, by the writer and comedian Moshe Kasher “Moshe Kasher has the rare gift to simultaneously celebrate a community while also making fun of it. His writing succinctly captures the insanity, the joy, the ridiculousness, and the radical act of fully embracing these worlds.”—Nick Kroll After bottoming out, being institutionalized, and getting sober all by the tender age of fifteen, Moshe Kasher found himself asking: “What’s next?” Over the ensuing decades, he discovered the answer: a lot. There was his time as a boy-king of Alcoholics Anonymous, a kind of pubescent proselytizer for other teens getting and staying sober. He was a rave promoter turned DJ turned sober ecstasy dealer in San Francisco’s techno warehouse party scene of the 1990s. For fifteen years he worked as a psychedelic security guard at Burning Man, fishing hippies out of hidden chambers they’d constructed to try to sneak into the event. As a child of deaf parents, Kasher became deeply immersed in deaf culture and sign language interpretation, translating everything from end-of-life care to horny deaf clients’ attempts to hire sex workers. He reconnects and tries to make peace with his ultra-Hasidic Jewish upbringing after the death of his father before finally settling into the comedy scene where he now makes his living. Each of these scenes gets a gonzo historiographical rundown before Kasher enters the narrative and tells the story of the lives he has spent careening from one to the next. A razor-sharp, gut-wrenchingly funny, and surprisingly moving tour of some of the most wildly distinct subcultures a person can experience, Subculture Vulture deftly weaves together memoir and propulsive cultural history. It’s a story of finding your people, over and over again, in different settings, and of knowing without a doubt that wherever you are is where you’re supposed to be.
