This is a collection of papers presented at the 13th International Conference on Aluminum Alloys (ICAA-13), the premier global conference for exchanging emerging knowledge on the structure and properties of aluminum materials. The papers are organized around the topics of the science of aluminum alloy design for a range of market applications; the accurate prediction of material properties; novel aluminum products and processes; and emerging developments in recycling and applications using both monolithic and multi-material solutions.

Metallurgy and Design of Alloys with Hierarchical Microstructures covers the fundamentals of processing-microstructure-property relationships and how multiple properties are balanced and optimized in materials with hierarchical microstructures widely used in critical applications. The discussion is based principally on metallic materials used in aircraft structures; however, because they have sufficiently diverse microstructures, the underlying principles can easily be extended to other materials systems. With the increasing microstructural complexity of structural materials, it is important for students, academic researchers and practicing engineers to possess the knowledge of how materials are optimized and how they will behave in service. The book integrates aspects of computational materials science, physical metallurgy, alloy design, process design, and structure-properties relationships, in a manner not done before. These papers present advancements in all aspects of high temperature electrochemistry, from the fundamental to the empirical and from the theoretical to the applied. Topics involving the application of electrochemistry to the nuclear fuel cycle, chemical sensors, energy storage, materials synthesis, refractory metals and their alloys, and alkali and alkaline earth metals are included. Also included are papers that discuss various technical, economic, and environmental issues associated with plant operations and industrial practices.

The world production of primary and recycled aluminum continues to increase and, over the past twenty years, has risen from ~15 Mt/y in 1985 to ~32 Mt/y in 2005. The main consumers are transportation, beverage and other packaging, and building construction. The global primary aluminum production has been growing by about 2-3% per year. However, growth rates over the last decade have been much higher. In particular, during the past five years, China has played a critical role in aluminum production and has gone through a dramatic period of growth.
