Arguments are the order of the day with Maja's parents. The father strikes hard when something doesn't suit him. He humiliates and insults his wife and children. Maja's mother can no longer take the abuse. She leaves the family and leaves her three children with her husband. One day, she picks Maja up from school and abducts her. The mother flees with her daughter to Prague in the hope of being able to lead a better life in the West. Maja has to cope with the catastrophic conditions that prevail in the Prague embassy in September 1989. There are days when she doesn't even get enough to eat and her mother constantly leaves her alone. Her mother meets her future husband Bertram in a reception camp. Maja is severely traumatized. The man abuses the girl. The child fears that she will never see her siblings again and that the abuse will never stop. Maja's own mother ignores her cries for help. She doesn't want to hear about the abuse. Will Maja see her siblings again? Will her nightmare end or will she remain defencelessly at the mercy of her stepfather?

This book analyzes practices of collecting in European art museums from 1989 to the present, arguing that museums actualize absence both consciously and unconsciously, while misrepresentation is an outcome of the absent perspectives and voices of minority community members which are rarely considered in relation to contemporary art. Difficult knowledge is proposed as a way of dealing with absence productively. Drawing on social art history, museology, postcolonial theory, and memory studies, Margaret Tali analyzes the collections of four modern and contemporary art museums across Europe: the Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin, the Ludwig Museum of Contemporary Art in Budapest, the Kiasma Museum in Helsinki, and the Kumu Museum in Tallinn.

In many contemporary societies we encounter iconoclasm breaking out with renewed violence. Iconoclastic actions against objects of visual material culture and testimonials of history act as dynamite in the public sphere. They are expressions of political, religious, national, and identity conflicts. Even the freedom of art is threatened by censorship and cancel culture. Based on case studies from different world regions, contemporary iconoclasms in art, media, and cultural heritage are critically analyzed from both a global and an interdisciplinary perspective. Divided into three sections, the book discusses attacks on monuments and memorials, idol disputes in museums and the visual arts, and forms of mediated iconoclasm in contemporary art.

When God Lost Her Tongue explores historical consciousness as captured through the Black feminist imagination that re-centers the perspectives of Black women in the African Diaspora, and revisits how Black women’s transatlantic histories are re-imagined and politicized in our contemporary moment.
