BOOK EXCERPT:
Joe Lilore, educator and author of 27 music books for Warner Bros. Music and United Artists - including books on The Rolling Stones, R*U*S*H, and Led Zeppelin - has taken his years of experience as an arranger, teacher, and guitarist and developed a system that allows for the creation of completely new and innovative chords and their movement. This unique chord book contains 1,848 C chords for 22,176 new chords in all. If you're a guitarist who's feeling in a rut in your playing or your solos, experiencing songwriter's block or feeling like all your music "sounds the same as everyone else's," this book is for you. Using the new chords you'll be able to expand your horizons and reach new musical heights, whether you're a veteran player or aspiring musician. With Guitar Chords for the 21st Century you'll play like no one has ever played before, totally free from boundaries, and never at a loss for inspiration, ideas, or material. For less than half the cost of one guitar lesson, you'll be able to eliminate songwriter's block and create limitless ideas for songs, background pads, or improvisation. It will provide you with an unlimited palette of colors to apply to your compositions and playing.

BOOK EXCERPT:
21st Century Chords for Guitar offers a new perspective on guitar chords. The standard chords that we all know work to "get us through" any accompaniment situation. However, there are more expressive possibilities to be found. In these pages you will see that the guitar is much less limited than is generally realized. Through the 12-tone system, or Atonal Music theory, I have found interesting voicings for many "every-day" chords. You will also find very unusual sounding chords that you probably wouldn't figure out using other methods. My goal is to help change the way we as guitar players think of chords on the instrument, so check it out!

BOOK EXCERPT:
Existing books on the analysis of popular music focus on theory and methodology, and normally discuss parts of songs briefly as examples. The impression often given is that songs are being chosen simply to illuminate and exemplify a theoretical position. In this book the obverse is true: songs take centre stage and are given priority. The authors analyse and interpret them intensively from a variety of theoretical positions that illuminate the song. Thus, methods and theories have to prove their use value in the face of a heterogeneous, contemporary repertoire. The book brings together researchers from very different cultural backgrounds and encourages them to compare their different hearings and to discuss the ways in which they make sense of specific songs. All songs analysed are from the new millennium, most of them not older than three years. Because the most widely popular styles are too often ignored by academics, this book aims to shed light on how million sellers work musically. Therefore, it encompasses a broad palette, highlighting mainstream pop (Lady Gaga, Ke$ha, Lucenzo, Amy McDonald), but also accounting for critically acclaimed ’indie’ styles (Fleet Foxes, Death Cab for Cutie, PJ Harvey), R&B (Destiny’s Child, Janelle Monae), popular hard rock (Kings of Leon, Rammstein), and current electronic music (Andrés, Björk). By concentrating on 13 well-known songs, this book offers some model analyses that can very easily be studied at home or used in seminars and classrooms for students of popular music at all academic levels.

BOOK EXCERPT:
In the 21st Century, the guitar, as both a material object and tool for artistic expression, continues to be reimagined and reinvented. From simple adaptations or modifications made by performers themselves, to custom-made instruments commissioned to fulfil specific functions, to the mass production of new lines of commercially available instruments, the extant and emergent forms of this much-loved musical instrument vary perhaps more than ever before. As guitars sporting multiple necks, a greater number of strings, and additional frets become increasingly common, so too do those with reduced registers, fewer strings, and fretless fingerboards. Furthermore, as we approach the mark of the first quarter-century, the role of technology in relation to the guitar's protean nature is proving key, from the use of external effects units to synergies with computers and AR headsets. Such wide-ranging evolutions and augmentations of the guitar reflect the advancing creative and expressive needs of the modern guitarist and offer myriad new affordances. 21st Century Guitar examines the diverse physical manifestations of the guitar across the modern performative landscape through a series of essays and interviews. Academics, performers and dual-practitioners provide significant insights into the rich array of guitar-based performance practices emerging and thriving in this century, inviting a reassessment of the guitar's identity, physicality and sound-creating possibilities.
