The Global Business Handbook

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

A nation's economic success depends on the capacity of its companies and trading organizations to develop business relationships, trade and do business in the international arena. Doing business across borders subtly changes the processes and skills the successful manager needs. Cultural, social, geographic and legal factors serve to complicate the picture. The mantra for managers today is think global, act local. In this handbook the authors concentrate on the big developments that currently are happening at an international level. They consider how managers operating in the global business landscape must change what they do to create advantages and remain competitive. The Global Business Handbook is based on the structure of the very successful IÉSEG International School of Management's programme on international management. It includes a global focus, backed by the latest research on different aspects of international business carried out in different parts of the world.

Japanese Management In Change

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Following the burst of the “economic bubble” in the 1990s, many Japanese companies were required to reform their management systems. Changes in corporate governance were widely discussed during that decade in studies on “Japanese management.” These discussions have resulted in little progress, however, since Americanization became the dominant discourse concerning governance and the management system. There have been few studies conducted from an academic point of view on the internal aspects of organizations that practice traditional Japanese management theory. This book examines how, and the degree to which, the development of market principles accompanying the advances of globalization has affected the traditional Japanese system. It focuses on four aspects of corporate management: management institutions, strategy, organization, and human resource management. The aggregation of the new management system in Japanese companies is regarded as a distinctive Japanese-style system of management. With emphasis on these four aspects, research was conducted on the basic structure of that system, following changes in the market, technology, and society. Further, specific functions of the basic structure of the Japanese-style management system were studied. Those findings are included here, along with a discussion and analysis of the direction of future changes.

Global Sport Business

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Global Sport Business: The Community Impact of Commercial Sport involves a range of pressing issues that come with the arrival of sport as a commodity in the world economy. It can be argued that, throughout the past two centuries, sport has always been recognized as both a frivolous pursuit of spending leisure time with friends and family, and as an activity that has substantial commercial value to be mined by entrepreneurs. However, only during the most recent wave of globalization, spurred by technological advancements that have led to achieving global reach in regard to potential customers, has sport entered a global marketplace that offers tremendous financial rewards for those who manage to control international sport organizations and events. In this book, global sport business is viewed from a number of different perspectives including a value chain approach to describing the sport industry; the ever increasing impact of the international media on sport business; how globalization influences the style of (sport) management; how social capital can be generated through sport business; and the emergence of social sport business. Overall, the different contributors to the book reflect on how sport’s global (and as such commercial) attractiveness can, and often will impact locally, on communities of people and individuals. This book was published as a special issue of Sport in Society.
