BOOK EXCERPT:
The Challenge of Change examines how military institutions attempted to meet the demands of the new strategic, political, and technological realities of the turbulent era between the First and Second World Wars. The contributors chose France, Germany, Great Britain, the Soviet Union, and the United States as focus countries because their military institutions endeavored to develop both the material capacity and the conceptual framework for the conduct of modern industrialized warfare on a continental scale. Also included are an introduction describing the intellectual and practical challenges facing the military reformer in peacetime and a concluding essay by Dennis Showalter drawing together the issues examined in the preceding studies and setting these themes in an interpretive, historiographical context. The Challenge of Change has been designed to meet the needs of historians, military professionals, and defense analysts.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Author Mark Harris, an Episcopal priest, says that Anglicans mostly define themselves by reflecting on their experience rather than by defining distinct theology or doctrine. Anglicans feel that their reason for being is bound up not with being Anglicans but with being Christians. This reticence to embrace an identity using the methods of other religious communities is a clear mark of Anglicanism, and yet, the identity as the Anglican Communion is a justifiable fellowship for this community. In this provocative text, the author addresses issues of authority and identity in the Anglican Communion as it emerges from modernity and explores a vision for it for the coming years.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Conservation of architecture - and the conversation of Modern architecture in particular – has assumed new challenges. Rather than attempting to return a Modern building to its resumed original state, the challenge of these proceedings is to revalue the essence of the manifold manifestations of Modern architecture and redefine its meanings in a rapidly changing world of digital revolution, worldwide mobility and environmental awareness. This volume aims to provide a variety of platforms for the exchange of ideas and experience. A large, international group of architects, historians, scholars, preservationists and other parties involved in the processes of preserving, renovating and transforming Modern buildings has been invited to investigate the paradox of the Modern monument, and to reflect on the manifold dilemmas of change and continuity. The general theme is elaborated through five sub-themes. The sub-theme ‘Change and Continuity’ addresses the tensions between change and continuity from a historical-theoretical perspective. ‘Restructuring Cities and Landscapes’ focuses on the larger scale of city and landscape, while ‘Shifts in Programme and Flexibility’ draws attention to the scale of the building or building complex, and questions limits of re-use and flexibility. The fourth sub-theme deals with education and the fifth sub-theme ‘Progress, Technology and Sustainability’ considers specific issues of techniques and materials.

BOOK EXCERPT:
There is constant pressure on hospitals to improve health care delivery and increase cost effectiveness. New initiatives are the order of the day in the dramatically different health care systems of the United States and Great Britain. Often, as we know all too well, these efforts are not successful. In The Challenge to Change, Rebecca Kolins Givan analyzes the successes and failures of efforts to improve hospitals and explains what factors make it likely that the implementation of reforms will rewarded by positive transformation in a particular institution’s day-to-day operation. Givan’s in-depth qualitative case studies of both top-down initiatives and changes first suggested by staff on the front lines of care point clearly to the importance of all hospital workers in effecting change and even influencing national policy. Givan illuminates the critical role of workers, managers, and unions in enabling or constraining changes in policies and procedures and ensuring their implementation. Givan spotlights an Anglo-American model of hospital care and work organization, even while these countries retain their differences in access and payment. Entrenched professional roles, hierarchical workplace organization, and the sometimes-detached view of policymakers all shape the prospects for change in hospitals. Givan provides important examples of how the dedication and imagination of the people who work in hospitals can make all the difference when it comes to providing quality health care even in a challenging economic environment.

BOOK EXCERPT:
What we experience in life - both good and bad - is the result of our ability to attract to ourselves events, people and situations that are on the same energetic wavelength. We are beings of energy, and as such we are all perfect magnets - attracting according to our personal energy vibration. A high, positive vibration attracts positive events, people and situations; a low, negative vibration attracts more negativity. So if you're not experiencing the life that you want, it could be that you are not energetically attuned for positive results! Or, equally, if you're not working on your own personal magnetism, allowing yourself to be influenced by other people's energy levels - good or bad - your experience of life will reflect your environment! So, who's creating your reality? By following this Challenge, you can become aware of your own energy levels and those around you, and then use the techniques to tune yourself into a more positive vibration that attracts positive results.

BOOK EXCERPT:
In this book Christopher Shaw analyses how liberalism has shaped our understanding of climate change and how liberalism is legitimated in the face of a crisis for which liberalism has no answers. The language and symbolism we use to make sense of climate change arose in the post-World War II liberal institutions of the West. This language and symbolism, in neutralising the philosophical and ideological challenge climate change poses to the legitimacy of free market liberalism, has also closed off the possibility of imagining a different kind of future for humanity. The book is structured around a repurposing of the ‘guardrail’ concept, commonly used in climate science narratives to communicate the boundary between safe and dangerous climate change. Five discursive ‘guardrails’ are identified, which define a boundary between safe and dangerous ideas about how to respond to climate change. The theoretical treatment of these issues is complemented with data from interviews with opinion-formers, decision-makers and campaigners, exploring what models of human nature and political possibilities guide their approach to the politics of climate change governance. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of climate change, liberal politics, environmental communication and environmental politics and philosophy, in general.
