The Law Of The Sea

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea follows a comprehensive approach and can be interpreted dynamically to include the regulation of all potential human uses of the ocean, but the law of the sea cannot be viewed in isolation from other fields of international law. International law does not resemble a hierarchically structured legal system; its different parts interact when different rules address the same activity or situation. The academic discussion concerning the specialization and proliferation of international legal rules and dispute settlement bodies has theoretical as well as practical relevance for the law of the sea and its interaction with other parts of international law. The intensified use of the oceans for different purposes and the ongoing proliferation of international rules addressing different activities from different perspectives and with distinct foci require a more thorough evaluation of how the law of the sea relates to other fields of international law, how the normative context can be approached theoretically and if interdisciplinary interfaces can be adequately addressed. This book discusses the normative context of the law of the sea and the interactions of the law of the sea with other legal regimes. By connecting high-quality research with new ideas and perspectives, this book offers expertise from different fields and perspectives in which the interaction between the law of the sea and other fields of international law becomes particularly relevant.

The Quintessence Of Basic And Clinical Research And Scientific Publishing

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The book, intended for biomedical researchers, attempts to foster a comprehensive understanding of the elements that impact scientific research, such as clinical trial design, communication, and publication methods. It introduces the process of idea generation and creative/critical thinking, leading to the development of key concepts that coalesce into theoretical constructs and working hypotheses. The book systematically delineates research phases associated with a bench-to-bedside translational approach, providing the full depth and breadth of drug discovery and development: design, synthesis, and optimization of drug candidates interacting with targets linked to diseases, as well as clinical trial design to acquire substantial evidence of efficacy and safety for candidate drugs in the target patient population. New and evolving topics such as artificial intelligence, machine and deep learning, drug repurposing approaches, and bioinformatics, are incorporated into the text as these features are becoming integrated into drug research and development. Additionally, it covers publication strategies, including literature search, manuscript preparation, data presentation, relevant discussion, editorial processes, elements of peer review, and bibliometrics. Finally, the book addresses grantsmanship, key strategies for building effective networks, mentorships, maintaining research integrity, and forging career advancement opportunities, including entrepreneurship.

Police

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This report provides suggestions for overall improvement in delivery of police services for greater protection against crime. The National Advisory Commission on Criminal Justice Standards and Goals considers the patrolman the primary force in reducing and preventing crime and thus directs its report recommendations toward increasing police effectiveness. Suggestions for improvements in police functions are presented in the areas of community, planning and organization, technology and support services, fiscal management, and coordination with other criminal justice agencies. These proposals appear in the form of more than 120 specific standards and recommendations that spell out where, why, and how these improvements can and should be made in the police segment of the criminal justice system. Report on police is a reference work for the practitioner -- patrolman to police chief -- as well as for the interested layman. Before implementing any of the changes advocated, police departments are advised to detail the legal limits of police authority and develop guidelines for the exercise of that authority. In order to improve cooperation between the police and the community it is suggested that police agencies establish a specialized unit for maintaining communication with citizens. Each police department should encourage and participate in neighborhood security programs and establish procedures to facilitate processing of complaints. Suggestions for more effective utilization of manpower include continued consolidation, stricter personnel requirements, increased employee benefits, and the employment of more women, minorities, and civilians in police work.
