A Learning Approach To Change

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Constant change is a given for most companies today. What differs is the scale, and the ability of people and organizations to deal with change in a positive, learning environment. Training must adapt too, to respond to the different learning styles of a new generation whose learning needs are the result of working in delayered, leaner, empowered organizations. Griffiths and Williams look at the implications for training and development, drawing on their first-hand experience of being with IBM during an extensive reengineering programme. With the aid of checklists, questions, summaries, 'food for thought' and numerous real-life examples, they show how to improve corporate performance through organized learning. The book underlines the vital importance of linking learning with business needs and evaluating it like any other investment.

BOOK EXCERPT:

Placing the UK in a global context, this book engages with the emerging international debate on the future of education in the 21st century. It examines the post-pandemic paradigm shift in educational practice in countries around the world and presents international case studies of emerging future practice. However, while it embraces the global context and the mega-forces therein, it is specifically focused on the challenges for education in England today and the potential strategies for moving forward to the all-inclusive, personalised, smarter and lifelong learning needed for tomorrow. In doing so, it explores how the new curriculum models, new approaches to pedagogy and new educational technology, such as AI and even robotics, might help to transform education in England, help “level-up” learning and help younger generations cope not only with the future as we know it but also the future that we don’t. This book will appeal to policymakers, students and scholars interested in the sociology of education, education policy, international education, international development and future studies, as well as those with a general interest in Education in the future.

The Meaning Of Learning And Knowing

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The Meaning of Learning and Knowing, co-authored by Erik Jan van Rossum and Rebecca Hamer, brings together empirical studies on epistemology, student thinking, teacher thinking, educational policy and staff development forging a solid and practical foundation for educational innovation. Since the 1980s they developed and published about a six-stage developmental model describing the qualitatively different ways students and teachers view learning and good teaching. A model with far reaching consequences for education, educational innovation and democratic society. Their comprehensive review of research from many disciplines underpins the empirical evidence of over 650 students and teachers. Each of the six worldviews results in a unique way of meaning making. These six Ways of Knowing, or Orders of Consciousness, are characterised by increasing complexity of thinking, with fourth level thinking—or self-authorship—representing the most common espoused goal of higher education. Ample evidence is presented that higher education is not attaining its own espoused goals. One explanation may be that many teachers in higher education have not themselves reached the minimum required way of knowing, preventing them from constructing a developmental path for their students. Van Rossum and Hamer’s epistemological model provides clear signposts on the developmental education highway and has proven its worth as an instrument for curriculum design, measurement of epistemological development and as a tool for staff development.
