Sean Meehan's book reclaims three important but critically neglected aspects of the late Emerson's "mind": first, his engagement with rhetoric, conceived as the organizing power of mind and, unconventionally, characterized by the trope "metonymy"; second, his public engagement with the ideals of liberal education and debates in higher education reform early in the period (1860-1910) that saw the emergence of the modern university; and third, his intellectual relation to significant figures from this age of educational transformation: Walt Whitman, William James, Harvard president Charles W. Eliot, and W.E.B. Du Bois, Harvard's first African American PhD. Meehan argues that the late Emerson educates through the "rhetorical liberal arts," and he thereby rethinks Emerson's influence as rhetorical lessons in the traditional pedagogy and classical curriculum of the liberal arts college.

Waldo Ralph Emerson (1803-1882) was a famous American writer and poet in the 19th century. He was also an educational thinker, who advocates reform and progress. As a representative of transcendentalism, he advocated the doctrine of individualism, emphasizing that the power of the spirit is far more than material, and that the potential of individual potential is infinite. Around him, gathered a group of people of insight, who were determined to transform the society, such as Amos Bronson Alcott (1799-1888), Margaret Fuller (1810-1850), Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864), Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862), etc. All of the above had once been teachers, and they were deeply saddened by the rigid education system and the old-fashioned education methods at the time, and firmly believed that the progress and improvement of society must be based on personal education and moral self-improvement. They actively participated in the mainstream of educational reforms that opened people’s mind, innovated their ways of thinking, and created a new culture with reformed educational system in New England. At the same time, transcendentalism has become an important part of American educational thought.

The history of women's education in the United States presents a continuous effort to move from the periphery to the mainstream, and this book examines both formal and informal opportunities for girls and women. Through an introductory essay and nearly 250 alphabetically arranged entries, this reference book examines institutions, persons, ideas, events, and movements in the history of women's education in the United States. As neoliberalism has expanded from corporations to higher education, the notion of “diversity” is increasingly seen as the contribution of individuals to an organization. By focusing on one liberal arts college, author Bonnie Urciuoli shows how schools market themselves as “diverse” communities to which all members contribute. She explores how students of color are recruited, how their lives are institutionally organized, and how they provide the faces, numbers, and stories that represent schools as diverse.
