Excerpt from A Military History of Perthshire, 1899-1902: Edited by the Marchioness of Tullibardine, With a Roll of the Perthshire Men of the Present Day Who Have Seen Active Service Under the British Flag It should be added that space has been found in the Roll for a mention of the men of the Yeomanry and Scottish Horse, who, enlisting for active service towards the end of the South African War. Arrived in South Africa to find that peace had been concluded. As the term Perthshire man is open to different interpretations, I may here explain that, following the lines on which the book had already been begun, I have included not only natives of the county, but men who, though not born in Perthshire, have resided therein in a civilian capacity for a period of not less than five years. The definition may perhaps be regarded as too comprehensive, but in a record such as this I would rather be accused of including too many than too few. It will, however, be readily understood that so wide a category has considerably added to the difficulties of compilation. From the first Miss Macdonald had intended that the records of the Perth shire men of the present day should be accompanied by letterpress, including some essays illustrative of the military achievements of the county in the past. The last four years have seen so wide a development of the historical portion of this scheme, besides a large increase in the number of records amassed, that it has been found impossible to publish all the material within the limits of one volume, and it has further been felt desirable that the work, instead of appearing, as originally proposed, under the name of The muster-roll of Perthshire, should bear the more distinctive title of a Military History of the county from 1660 onwards. The present volume, therefore, besides the records and portraits of officers and men of the present day, and appreciations of three distinguished men connected with the county who lost their lives in the late South African War, includes only articles dealing with that war. All historical matter prior to 1899 will be found in A Military History of Perthshire, 1660 which is published uniformly with this volume. This is one of the most valuable books in the armoury of the serious student of British Military history. It is a new and revised edition of Arthur White's much sought-after bibliography of regimental, battalion and other histories of all regiments and Corps that have ever existed in the British Army. This new edition includes an enlarged addendum to that given in the 1988 reprint. It is, quite simply, indispensible.

Featuring previously unpublished sources, this 'enjoyable as well as massively impressive' bestseller is a definitive account of the Boer War (Financial Times) The war declared by the Boers on 11 October 1899 gave the British, as Kipling said, 'no end of a lesson'. It proved to be the longest, the costliest, the bloodiest and the most humiliating campaign that Britain fought between 1815 and 1914. Thomas Pakenham's narrative is based on first-hand and largely unpublished sources ranging from the private papers of the leading protagonists to the recollections of survivors from both sides. Mammoth in scope and scholarship, as vivid, fast-moving and breathtakingly compelling as the finest fiction. The Boer War is the definitive account of this extraordinary conflict - a war precipitated by greed and marked by almost inconceivable blundering and brutalities...and whose shattering repercussions can be felt to this very day. 'Not only a magnum opus, it is a conclusive work ... Enjoyable as well as massively impressive' - Financial Times 'This is a wonderful book: brilliantly written ... the reader turns each page with increasing fascination and admiration' -A.J.P. Taylor

This book spotlights Britain's “citizen army” to show who these volunteers were, why they enlisted, how they were trained—and how they quickly became disillusioned when they found themselves committed not to the supposed glories of conventional battle but instead to a prolonged guerrilla war.

The Great War was the first conflict to draw men and women into uniform on a massive scale. From a small regular force of barely 250,000, the British Army rapidly expanded into a national force of over five million. A Nation in Arms brings together original research into the impact of the war on the army as an institution, gives a revealing account of those who served in it and offers fascinating insights into its social history during one of the bloodiest wars.
