The author has made this treatise on Madhva’s realistic school of Ved?nta philosophy convincing to the modern mind by employing western logical apparatus in substantiating Madhva’s ideas. Following the Indian classical tradition, the author has examined the validity of Advaitaved?nta, the Absolute Monism of ?a?kara and Bh?skara as P?rvapak?a, and logically proved its inconsistencies. He has then established the Dvaitasiddh?nta i.e., the Monotheistic Dualism of Madhva. He has successfully brought out the nuances of the realistic school of Indian philosophical thought in this work. A Modern Introduction to M?dhva Philosophy is Prof B H Kotabagi’s posthumous publication.

This collection of articles and review essays, including many hard to find pieces, comprises the most important and fundamental studies of Indian logic and linguistics ever undertaken. Frits Staal is concerned with four basic questions: Are there universals of logic that transcend culture and time? Are there universals of language and linguistics? What is the nature of Indian logic? And what is the nature of Indian linguistics? By addressing these questions, Staal demonstrates that, contrary to the general assumption among Western philosophers, the classical philosophers of India were rationalists, attentive to arguments. They were in this respect unlike contemporary Western thinkers inspired by existentialism or hermeneutics, and like the ancient Chinese, Greeks, and many medieval European schoolmen, only—as Staal says—more so. The present work consists of an analytical study and critique of certain aspects of Buddhist tradition as they bear upon some central problems of logic and ontology. The author examines the logical, epistemological and ontological doctrines of Dignaga, Dharmakirti and Ratnakirti on the one hand and of W.V. Quine on the other. She agrees with Quine that a sharp line of demarcation between analytic and synthetic statements is untenable and she argues that a position similar to Quine`s obtains in the writings of the Buddhist logicians. She provides convincing arguments to the effect that the Buddhist logicians` rejection of substance ontology leads to the rejection of any claim to the ultimacy of the analytical-synthetic distinction.Divided into seven chapters and documented with Preface, Bibliography and General Index, this work is a rare contribution in the field of Comparative Philosophy.

Buddhist philosophy is concerned with defining and overcoming the limitations and errors of perception.
