This is a book of strategies and tactical plays, written by practitioners, for practitioners. It is designed to help innovators develop more effective approaches to benefitting from early stage university research. The authors are commercial innovators, experienced in the creation of partnerships to create and exploit valuable new ideas. They have decades of senior level experience in the research, innovation and product development teams of large multi-nationals, smaller high-tech companies, and start-up businesses. The unique perspectives offered by the authors cover all the key issues that an innovator needs to understand to help them achieve high-impact and mutually beneficial partnerships with academic researchers.

As funding for universities and governmental research units has declined, these institutions have turned to the private sector to augment their research and development budgets. This book presents a framework for structuring public-private research partnerships that protect both these institutions’ academic freedom and the private firm’s corporate interests. This formulation is developed using insights originating from the incomplete contracting and collective decision making literatures. The book presents a number of template designs for a variety of research partnerships.

Partnerships in Education Research provides the epistemological and philosophical basis for engaging with partners in research and discusses many of the practical issues facing researchers such as finding the right research partner, developing partnership protocols, joint planning approaches and creating effective research relationships. The authors also consider the theoretical, ethical and socio-cultural aspects of partnership research and the potential for partnership research to have long lasting effects on educational practice. The book draws on a diverse range of case studies to explore practical issues, methodologies, challenges, and benefits of partnership research in education. Partnerships in Education Research offers a series of principles and models that can be applied to the development of an effective partnership research project.

This Review sets out to propose a structure for the funding arrangements for the whole spectrum of health research, with the objective of obtaining the maximum benefit from research success and, where possible, eliminating duplication of effort. The Review found, however, that the UK is at risk of failing to reap the full economic, health and social benefits that the UK's public investment in health research should generate. There is no overarching UK health research strategy to ensure UK health priorities are considered through all types of research and there are two key gaps in the translation of health research: (i) translating ideas from basic and clinical research into the development of new products and approaches to treatment of disease and illness; (ii) implementing those new products and approaches into clinical practice. The Review also found that the wider funding arrangements for supporting translation of ideas from conception to practice could be more coherent or comprehensive and, where arrangements exist, they do not function well. The Review identified cultural, institutional and financial barriers to translating research into practice in the publicly funded research arena. But it also found that, in the private sector, the pharmaceuticals industry is facing increasing challenges in translating research into health and economic benefit. The Review has sought to make recommendations that will increase the translation of R&D into health and economic benefit for the UK, both in the public and private sectors. The Review recommends that the Government should seek to achieve better coordination of health research and more coherent funding arrangements to support translation by establishing an Office for Strategic Coordination of Health Research (OSCHR).

Encouraged by their institutions and governments and aided by advances in technology and communication, researchers increasingly pursue international collaborations with high hopes for scientific breakthroughs, intellectual stimulation, access to research equipment and populations, and the satisfaction of global engagement. International Research Collaborations considers what can and does go wrong in cross-national research collaborations, and how scientists can avoid these problems in order to create and sustain productive, mutually-enriching partnerships. Unfamiliar approaches to training, legal and regulatory complications, and differences in funding and administration pose challenges for collaboration that are then compounded by the need to satisfy the requirements of different research systems. To help today’s international researchers create the best possible partnerships, chapters by funding officers, diplomats, attorneys, publishers, regulators, graduate students and postdocs, industry researchers, administrators, and scholars of responsible research address the following key trouble spots: how research is organized and funded the legal and normative environments of research differences in regulation and oversight variation in graduate education and postdoctoral training. International Research Collaborations will provide valuable insights to researchers who are collaborating or who intend to collaborate, as well as to administrators, funders, regulators, editors, and policy-makers involved in cross-national research.
