Alternatives programming is one of the most widely employed prevention strategies in the nation. Yet, even for the most experienced prevention specialist, it is often difficult to articulate what constitutes alternatives programming. This document serves as a basis from which this prevention strategy might be better understood and implemented. It examines research into the long-held belief that alternatives programs can provide youth with the skills and desire to refrain from alcohol and drug abuse, and offers policy-makers and practitioners the informational tools with which they might design better alternatives.
