BOOK EXCERPT:
The book begins by revealing new ideas about how and why embolic stroke and heart attacks share a common history involving clot formation. The only distinction between the two diseases is where the clot finally stops. If in the brain, it results in a stroke; if in the heart muscle, a heart attack. Thus the first portion of the book (Chapters 1-4) documents how the mechanism of clot formation was studied through the eyes of a lifelong research scientist who was not a stroke expert, but a stroke survivor. Described in those chapters are entirely new ideas about how and why clots form, and how to prevent them. While my four years of stroke investigation (so far) was unfolding, I simultaneously carefully recorded my daily observations as I experienced an embolic shower-type of stroke. My goal was to assemble a guide for all stroke victims alerting them what to expect, and also my evaluation of a number of treatment modalities, nutrients/supplements etc., designed to save money and frustration to newcomers to the stroke world as well as the initiated. The big difference between this and other accounts of embolic stroke is that in this case it is framed in the context of an aging body. If you do not already know, this distinction is important since there is a fine line between the effects of aging and the effects of stroke. The upshot of this book is to offer my evidence to the reader that stroke and heart attack are largely avoidable diseases. My thought is, if the reader thinks what I say makes sense, they can take the recommended action starting today to minimize their risk. And it is so incredibly simple and virtually cost-free.

BOOK EXCERPT:
What is an inclusive school community? How do stakeholders perceive their roles and responsibilities towards inclusive school communities? How can school communities become more inclusive through engagement with individual perspectives? Diverse Perspectives on Inclusive School Communities captures and presents the voices of a wide range of stakeholders including young people and their parents, teachers, support staff, educational psychologists, social workers, health practitioners and volunteers in producing a collection of varied perspectives on inclusive education. In this fascinating book, Tsokova and Tarr uniquely assemble a compilation of accounts collected through in-depth interviews with over twenty-five participants, met throughout the course of their professional lives. The authors focus on how we can ensure all children receive the best education and social provision in inclusive school communities. Key learning points in this book emphasise: links between early life and educational experiences; constructions of inclusion; an understanding of roles and responsibilities; the power of agency in relation to inclusive school communities. The text contributes to current debates surrounding educational policy initiatives, highlighting similarities and differences across people and professions, and illuminating a way forward for the consideration of a broader range of insight into the concept of inclusion and ways this can be achieved. Including both UK and international perspectives that illustrate different stages of the inclusive education process, this text will be invaluable to anyone affiliated with inclusive schooling in a personal or professional capacity.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Set on Malta and written partly as a homage to the beat generation writers, The Death of Poetry is a taut psychological exploration of relationships and situations that entwine the characters we observe through the narration. Opening with a seemingly unsuspicious death at a facility for ‘the unhinged’, our island detective at first feels it is just a circumstantial accident; after all, many inside are damaged and alone, having dealt with their addictions and afflictions. It is when a fresh victim appears, most definitely murdered, that he begins to unravel the fragile links and faint memories of those he now must confront from his own past—one he may not have wanted to remember for himself.

BOOK EXCERPT:
A finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, Duong Van Mai Elliott's The Sacred Willow illuminates recent Vietnamese history by weaving together the stories of the lives of four generations of her family. Beginning with her great-grandfather, who rose from rural poverty to become an influential landowner, and continuing to the present, Mai Elliott traces her family's journey through an era of tumultuous change. She tells us of childhood hours in her grandmother's silk shop, and of hiding while French troops torched her village, watching while blossoms torn by fire from the trees flutter "like hundreds of butterflies" overhead. She makes clear the agonizing choices that split Vietnamese families: her eldest sister left her staunchly anti-communist home to join the Viet Minh, and spent months sleeping in jungle camps with her infant son, fearing air raids by day and tigers by night. And she follows several family members through the last, desperate hours of the fall of Saigon-including one nephew who tried to escape by grabbing the skid of a departing American helicopter. Based on family papers, dozens of interviews, and a wealth of other research, this is not only a memorable family saga but a record of how the Vietnamese themselves have experienced their times.

Harrowing and hopeful tales from doctors inside the emergency room at Staten Island University Hospital—one of the flagship hospitals of Northwell Health, New York’s largest health care provider Open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year—through winter storms, hurricanes, and global pandemics—emergency rooms are vital to the safety of any community. Day in and day out, thousands of patients pass through their doors to address their immediate medical needs. From life-threatening illnesses to minor ailments, ER doctors and nurses are the first line of defense when something goes wrong with our bodies. Written as a series of essays and stories by real ER doctors, The Emergency Diaries gives readers a glimpse into the hearts and minds of medicine’s finest, and the seemingly insurmountable challenges these everyday heroes face.
