I was born during the winter of 1944 by an unwed, seventeenyear old, frightened Norwegian girl on the war-torn soil of Germany. Unknowingly, she became part of Heinrich Himmler’s plan, known as the Lebensborn Program, a master design for cultivating an Aryan race. The unfolding story is both revealing and touching. Smiling on a Troubled Planet by David O. Idahosa A British-born Arab man studying at University College in London decides to be recruited by the terrorist group ISIS, in an attempt to liberate them from their world of hatred and vengeance. To teach the truth smilingly was, during the Renaissance, a frequently expressed goal among prose writers and poets such as Erasmus, Berni, Ronsard, Rabelais, and du Bellay, who adopted an ironic posture within their mock encomia in order to refer the reader beyond the realm of the literary structure. In this book Annette Tomarken reconstructs the history of the classical satirical eulogy as it was revived, expanded, and finally adapted to new purposes in Renaissance literature. Tracing the development of this type of paradox from its classic roots through the Neo-Latin, Italian, and French mock encomia, Tomarken examines its various forms in the Renaissance, including the Pliade "hymne-blason," the mock epitaph, and the stage "harangue." Her book provides a new context for such works as In Praise of Folly and for such literary passages as Rabelais's praise of debts and Falstaff's denunciation of honor. Dividing the eulogies into three groups--praises of vices, disease, and animals and insects--Tomarken brings humor as well as close textual analysis to her study. She finds that the practitioners of the form were aware of its history and that such self-awareness became an integral part of the works themselves. An increased sensitivity to the literary structure and history of the paradoxical encomium, Tomarken stresses, first requires and then enriches our understanding of the genre's relationship to the extra-literary domain. Chris Smith is a highly respected rock and blues musician who has been performing and writing for over six decades. His beginnings are very similar to so many aspiring pop and rock stars of the 60s, at- tending Art College and absorbing the explosion of music of that era. Art School was the unofficial music school for British musicians in the 60s and 70s and in 1967 Chris Smith attended Ealing Art College. It was there he started writing songs with Freddie Bulsara following the formation of the band, Smile. Bulsara became Freddie Mercury, Smile became Queen and Chris remained true to the blues music that had inspired him from his early teens. The rest is history. One song which Chris worked on with Freddie, he called the Cowboy song, but they were never able to finish it. Freddie came up with the first line: “Momma, just killed a man, put a gun against his head, pulled my trigger, now he’s dead.” The song was shelved, only to emerge seven years later as Bohemian Rhapsody. Curiously it contained a line Brian had composed for a song Smile played: “Is this the real life.” His dream was never to be rich and famous. As he told Freddie Mercury: “I’d like to have a little blues band in which I’d be the songwriter.” He has achieved this, and is never happier than in the company of fellow musicians. Today he performs as the CJ Smith Band. This is his story.
