Focusing on sending states’ engagement in the area of social protection, this book shows how a series of emigration-related policies that go beyond the realm of social security address the needs of nationals abroad in the area of health care, unemployment, family benefits, pensions and economic hardship. In addition, this volume highlights the variety of sending states’ institutions that are involved in these policies (consulates, diaspora institutions, ministries, agencies...) and their engagement with citizens abroad in other policy areas such as electoral rights, citizenship, language, culture, education, business or religion. This is the second of a two-volume work taking stock of the study of Africa in the twenty-first century: its status, research agenda and approaches, and place. It is divided into two parts, the first entitled Globalisation Studies and African Studies, and the second, African Studies in Regional Contexts. Topics addressed in part one include: trans-boundary formations and the study of Africa; global economic liberalisation and development in Africa; African diasporas, academics and the struggle for a global epistemic presence; and the problem of translation in African studies. In an approachable way, but without avoiding complexity, Embodying Mind leads the reader through the Worlds of panpsychism, idealism, Aristotelianism, emergence, and information theory, holism, and process theology, examining the ideas of ethics and God, and the difficult questions, accompanying each. Thompson concludes that causal processes harmonize as in a cosmic counterpoint. The world and its beautiful contents form a seamless material whole. It is not as if Mind or God glints obscurely through ever-narrowing chinks in otherwise seamless nature. There are no chinks, but the whole is full of Mind. Overall, imperfectly, things are moving towards their sustaining good: God is becoming God, surpassing God. Embodying Mind can be read independently from Outgrowing Materialism, but together the two volumes of Ten Ways to Weave the Word mount a robust, wide-ranging case that nobody interested in the science v. religion debate, or wishing more widely for an integrated understanding of “Matter, Mind and God,” can afford to ignore.

Academia versus the World Outside lays out the givens of the knowledge industry located within the ivory tower, colleges and universities. It then moves outside academia to consider this restricted world the way most people see it. The contrast between these two views of academia explains and is at the basis of the left–right animosity of our day. The knowledge industry, a creation of the post-Enlightenment modern age along with other industrial and post-industrial enterprises, is based on creating and adding to a store of knowledge as its own end. This makes academia alien to the more random and personal nature of knowledge acquisition in our everyday lives, as indeed every industry is alien to everyday life in the modern age. Yet most academics are so immersed in the peculiar project they have chosen as their life’s work that they are either unaware of or unsympathetic to the fact that people outside live very different lives with very different presuppositions. Most non-academics, for their part, find academia strange, and for very good reason. Academia versus the World Outside makes this contrast and conflict clear from both directions. This book is aimed primarily at academics, most of whom so take for granted the givens of what they do that they fail to understand why the vast majority of people outside find academia alien. This has led to an increasingly hostile and utterly predictable left–right political conflict, academia tending increasingly left and the world outside increasingly right. The goal of this book is to reduce the tension between both sides: if read by non-academics, this book may help these understand the givens of a world as strange to everyday life as any other specialized industry in the modern age.

McMaster University was established in 1887 as a trust to the Baptist constituency of central Canada. This second volume of the university’s history chronicles its transformation from a modest university college into an important university. It is the story of survival through the Depression and the Second World War to eventual emergence as a recognized scientific research centre and of how this role, never envisaged at the time when arts and theology were McMaster’s chief concerns, dictated the university’s divorce from its original Baptist sponsors. McMaster’s move to Hamilton in 1930 coincided with the Depression, a catastrophe that haunted the university throughout the decade, thwarting new programs, forcing economies, and shattering the hopes entertained for the institution during the 1920s. This chastening interlude was followed by war, which further curbed development and created serious financial and enrolment problems, but the war also spurred scientific research, particularly in nuclear physics. Funds for science were sought outside the Baptist constituency, but to be eligible for them a new and separate institution had to be formed, so in 1948 Hamilton College was incorporated and affiliated with McMaster. Members of the arts faculty were disturbed by the growing stress on science, and the university’s attempts to strengthen arts and theology in the 1950s so threatened to overtax its resources that McMaster was forced to seek state aid for its entire operation. In 1957, McMaster was reorganized as a private non-denominational institution, eligible for public funding. Its days as a Baptist university came to an end. Charles Johnston pays tribute to those dedicated and resourceful administrators who, through depression, war, and ideological conflicts, provided the expertise essential to the survival and growth of McMaster. This volume, like its predecessor and successor, will be of interest to anyone concerned with the cultural and intellectual growth of the nation.

Charles E. Snyder considers the New Academy's attacks on Stoic epistemology through a critical re-assessment of the 3rd century philosopher, Arcesilaus of Pitane. Arguing that the standard epistemological framework used to study the ancient Academy ignores the metaphysical dimensions at stake in Arcesilaus's critique, Snyder explores new territory for the historiography of Stoic-Academic debates in the early Hellenistic period. Focusing on the dispute between the Old and New Academy, Snyder reveals the metaphysical dimensions of Arcesilaus' arguments as essential to grasping what is innovative about the so-called New Academy. Resisting the partiality for epistemology in the historical reconstructions of ancient philosophy, this book defends a new philosophical framework that re-positions Arcesilaus' attack on the early Stoa as key to his deviation from the metaphysical foundations of both Stoic and Academic virtue ethics. Drawing on a wide range of scholarship on Hellenistic philosophy in French, Italian, and German, Beyond Hellenistic Epistemology builds bridges between analytical and continental approaches to the historiography of ancient philosophy, and makes an important and disruptive contribution to the literature.
