This book constitutes the revised selected papers of the 21st Smoky Mountains Computational Sciences and Engineering Conference, SMC 2021, held in Oak Ridge, TN, USA*, in October 2021. The 33 full papers and 3 short papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from a total of 88 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections of computational applications: converged HPC and artificial intelligence; advanced computing applications: use cases that combine multiple aspects of data and modeling; advanced computing systems and software: connecting instruments from edge to supercomputers; deploying advanced computing platforms: on the road to a converged ecosystem; scientific data challenges. *The conference was held virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

This book presents a collection of papers presented at the 3rd World Congress on Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME), a specialty conference organized by The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS). This meeting convened ICME stakeholders to examine topics relevant to the global advancement of ICME as an engineering discipline. The papers presented in these proceedings are divided into six sections: (1) ICME Applications; (2) ICME Building Blocks; (3) ICME Success Stories and Applications (4) Integration of ICME Building Blocks: Multi-scale Modeling; (5) Modeling, Data and Infrastructure Tools, and (6) Process Optimization. . Contemporary High Performance Computing: From Petascale toward Exascale focuses on the ecosystems surrounding the world’s leading centers for high performance computing (HPC). It covers many of the important factors involved in each ecosystem: computer architectures, software, applications, facilities, and sponsors. The first part of the book examines significant trends in HPC systems, including computer architectures, applications, performance, and software. It discusses the growth from terascale to petascale computing and the influence of the TOP500 and Green500 lists. The second part of the book provides a comprehensive overview of 18 HPC ecosystems from around the world. Each chapter in this section describes programmatic motivation for HPC and their important applications; a flagship HPC system overview covering computer architecture, system software, programming systems, storage, visualization, and analytics support; and an overview of their data center/facility. The last part of the book addresses the role of clouds and grids in HPC, including chapters on the Magellan, FutureGrid, and LLGrid projects.
