BOOK EXCERPT:
The book introduces advanced theories for deformation, damage, and failure in materials. The overall continuum mechanical framework was marked out and added by creep and damage mechanics of materials at elevated temperatures. The time-dependent and time-independent models of cyclic plasticity for low cycle and thermomechanical fatigue life assessment were specified in a very special manner: instead of three-dimensional statements, only one-dimensional rheological models were discussed. Anisotropic plasticity during non-proportional loading and anisotropy of yield/failure criteria is more and more important in modern applications. It is showing how the limit states of materials can be estimated. In addition, the damage and failure of composite materials demonstrate the possibility to extend continuum mechanics to continuum damage mechanics of composite materials.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Damage prognosis is a natural extension of damage detection and structural health monitoring and is forming a growing part of many businesses. This comprehensive volume presents a series of fundamental topics that define the new area of damage prognosis. Bringing together essential information in each of the basic technologies necessary to perform damage prognosis, it also reflects the highly interdisciplinary nature of the industry through the extensive referencing of each of the component disciplines. Taken from lectures given at the Pan American Advanced Studies Institute in Damage Prognosis sponsored by the US National Science Foundation in cooperation with Los Alamos National Laboratories, this book will be essential reading for anyone looking to get to grips with the fundamentals of damage prognosis. Presents the 'ground rules' for Damage Prognosis. Deals with interdisciplinary topics: rotating machines, aerospace structures, automotive components and civil structures. Covers essential technical material: equations, graphs and plots, tables and photographs. Offers additional material from the associated workshop on an active web site.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Mechanics of Materials in Modern Manufacturing Methods and Processing Techniques provides a detailed overview of the latest developments in the mechanics of modern metal forming manufacturing. Focused on mechanics as opposed to process, it looks at the mechanical behavior of materials exposed to loading and environmental conditions related to modern manufacturing processes, covering deformation as well as damage and fracture processes. The book progresses from forming to machining and surface-treatment processes, and concludes with a series of chapters looking at recent and emerging technologies. Other topics covered include simulations in autofrettage processes, modeling strategies related to cutting simulations, residual stress caused by high thermomechanical gradients and pultrusion, as well as the mechanics of the curing process, forging, and cold spraying, among others. Some non-metallic materials, such as ceramics and composites, are covered as well. - Synthesizes the latest research in the mechanics of modern metal forming processes - Suggests theoretical models and numerical codes to predict mechanical responses - Covers mechanics of shot peening, pultrusion, hydroforming, magnetic pulse forming - Considers applicability of different materials and processes for optimum performance

BOOK EXCERPT:
Deformation Based Processing of Materials: Behavior, Performance, Modeling and Control focuses on deformation based process behaviors and process performance in terms of the quality of the needed shape, geometries, and the requested properties of the deformed products. In addition, modelling and simulation is covered to create an in-depth and epistemological understanding of the process. Other topics discussed include ways to efficiently reduce or avoid defects and effectively improve the quality of deformed parts. The book is ideal as a technical document, but also serves as scientific literature for engineers, scientists, academics, research students and management professionals involved in deformation based materials processing. - Covers process behaviors, such as non-uniform deformation, unstable deformation, material flow phenomena, and process performance - Includes modelling and simulation of the entire deformation process - Looks at control of the preferred deformation, undesirable material flow, avoidance and reduction of defects, and improving the dimensional accuracy, surface quality and microstructure construction of the produced products

BOOK EXCERPT:
Three subjects of major interest in one textbook: linear elasticity, mechanics of structures in linear isotropic elasticity, and nonlinear mechanics including computational algorithms. After the simplest possible, intuitive approach there follows the mathematical formulation and analysis, with computational methods occupying a good portion of the book. There are several worked-out problems in each chapter and additional exercises at the end of the book, plus mathematical expressions are bery often given in more than one notation. The book is intended primarily for students and practising engineers in mechanical and civil engineering, although students and experts from applied mathematics, materials science and other related fields will also find it useful.

Summary: A Generalized Multiscale Analysis Approach brings together comprehensive background information on the multiscale nature of the composite, constituent material behaviour, damage models and key techniques for multiscale modelling, as well as presenting the findings and methods, developed over a lifetime's research, of three leading experts in the field. The unified approach presented in the book for conducting multiscale analysis and design of conventional and smart composite materials is also applicable for structures with complete linear and nonlinear material behavior, with numerous applications provided to illustrate use. Modeling composite behaviour is a key challenge in research and industry; when done efficiently and reliably it can save money, decrease time to market with new innovations and prevent component failure.
