Despite the occasional outcries to the contrary, the field of behavior therapy is still growing, and the asymptote has not been reached yet. The umbrella of behavior therapy continues to enlarge and still is able to encompass new theories, new con cepts, new research, new data, and new clinical techniques. Although the number of new behavioral journals now has stabilized, we still see a proliferation of books on the subject. In the past few years, however, we have seen considerable specialization within behavior therapy. No longer is it possible to be a generalist and remain fully abreast of all the relevant developments. Thus, we see behavior therapists who deal with adults, those who deal with children, those whose specialty is hospital psychiatry, and those who see themselves as practitioners of behavioral medicine. Even within a subarea such as behavioral medicine, specialization runs supreme to the extent that there are experts in the specific addictions, adult medical problems, and child medical problems. Given the extent of specialization, there are numerous ways "to skin" the pro verbial "cat." We therefore have chosen to look at the contemporary work in behavior therapy that is being carried out with adults, in part, of course, because of our long-standing interest in this area as teachers, researchers, and clinicians. In so doing, we have chosen to highlight the clinical aspects of the endeavor but not at the expense of the rich research heritage for each of the specific adult disorders.

Although we speak of "the elderly" as if there were one body of people with common characteristics, older adults are more heterogeneous than any other popu lation. People over the age of 65 are also the fastest-growing segment of the population in the United States, currently numbering 25 million. The majority of older adults reside in their communities; a small fraction of them are cared for in institutions. Most may expect to experience some kind of physical impairment. Approximately a quarter of the population may expect to suffer amental health impairment. While traditional therapies have not been especially effective for older adults, behavior therapy has shown exceptional promise as a treatment modality. This book presents a comprehensive explication of the relatively new field of behavioral gerontology. It was written for the clinician interested in the interaction of medical, environmental, and psychological variables and their effects on treatment of elderly clients and for the researcher who will be looking to extend knowledge about interventions with this population. It will be useful for the graduate student in clinical psychology, as weIl as the experienced clinician, who will want to include the elderly in his or her therapeutic population.

Since 1978, the editors have collaborated on several research projects and spent many hours at conventions discussing research, graduate education, and patient care. The idea for this volume arose when we both concluded that the area of behavioral pediatrics needed a "how to" book. Several important scholarly re views had recently appeared. They presented excellent summary information concerning the general assumptions and theories underlying the area of behav ioral medicine with children. But these volumes devote very little attention to the application of clinical methods. What was needed, we thought, was a book that would allow graduate students and practicing clinicians the opportunity to peer into the minds of eminent practitioners and understand their thinking. Thus the book was conceived. Editing books represents a special kind of challenge. One has to "sell" an idea to a group of distinguished colleagues. They have to believe enough in that idea to devote the considerable time and effort necessary to bring thought into reality. In this case, there were two ideas we tried to sell to our colleagues.

Advances in Cognitive–Behavioral Research and Therapy, Volume 1 comprises a diversity of topics relating to cognition and behavior. This book discusses the clinical cognitive constructs; selected issues in cognitive assessment and therapy; and potential theoretical framework for cognitive-behavioral therapy. The study of self-regulatory failure; social problem solving in adults; and cognitive-behavioral approach to recurrent tension and migraine headache are also deliberated in this text. This publication is valuable to researchers and clinicians concerned with cognition and behavior.

This book provides a scientific and practical guide for training and supervision in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). It builds on more general fundamentals of clinical supervision with a theory-driven approach backed by empirical support for training and supervising clinicians in the practice of CBT. The book dispels the myth of “do it, teach it” as it relates to supervision and addresses the importance of recognizing that one size does not fit all with CBT supervision. The volume synthesizes CBT research on supervision and links it to the practice of supervision. It reviews components of supervision that warrant consideration (e.g., therapeutic alliance, ethics), specific settings (e.g., medical setting, schools) and clients (e.g., culture, individual, group, disability, and high-risk). The last two decades have seen unprecedented increases in health care costs and, at the same time, encouraging progress in psychotherapy research. On the one hand, accountability, cost-effectiveness, and efficiency have now become commonplace terms for providers of mental health services whereas, on the other hand, an increasingly voluminous literature has emerged supporting the effectiveness of a number of types of psychotherapies. There now exists the possibility for the design and delivery of mental health services that-drawing upon this literature-more closely approximate empirically established data concerning the appropriateness and effectiveness of psychotherapy. The Handbook of the Brief Psychotherapies is intended to capture one major thrust of this movement: the development of a group of empirically grounded, time-limited therapies all sharing a common interest in the clinical utilization of a structured focus and an emphasis on time and action. For many years, professional self-interest, competing theoretical para digms, and the vagaries of practice, wisdom, and clinical myth have influenced the practice of psychotherapy. A critical questioning of the resulting, predomi nantly nondirective, open-ended, and global therapies has led to a growing emphasis on action-oriented, problem-focused, time-limited therapies. Yet, ironically, this interest in the brief psychotherapies has not so much involved a radical departure from traditional therapeutic modalities as it has emphasized a new pragmatism about how time, action, and structure operate in life as well as in therapy.
