This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 6th International Conference on Extending Database Technology, EDBT '98, held in Valencia, Spain, in March 1998. The 32 revised full papers presented together with one invited keynote were selected from a total of 191 submissions. The book is divided in sections on similarity search and indexing, query optimization on the Web, Algorithms for data mining, modelling in OLAP, query processing and storage management, aggregation and summary data, object-oriented and active databases, view maintenance and integrity, databases and the Web, workflow and scientific databases.

The 9th International Conference on Extending Database Technology, EDBT 2004, was held in Heraklion, Crete, Greece, during March 14–18, 2004. The EDBT series of conferences is an established and prestigious forum for the exchange of the latest research results in data management. Held every two years in an attractive European location, the conference provides unique opp- tunities for database researchers, practitioners, developers, and users to explore new ideas, techniques, and tools, and to exchange experiences. The previous events were held in Venice, Vienna, Cambridge, Avignon, Valencia, Konstanz, and Prague. EDBT 2004 had the theme “new challenges for database technology,” with the goal of encouraging researchers to take a greater interest in the current exciting technological and application advancements and to devise and address new research and development directions for database technology. From its early days, database technology has been challenged and advanced by new uses and applications, and it continues to evolve along with application requirements and hardware advances. Today’s DBMS technology faces yet several new challenges. Technological trends and new computation paradigms, and applications such as pervasive and ubiquitous computing, grid computing, bioinformatics, trust management, virtual communities, and digital asset management, to name just a few, require database technology to be deployed in a variety of environments and for a number of di?erent purposes. Such an extensive deployment will also require trustworthy, resilient database systems, as well as easy-to-manage and ?exible ones, to which we can entrust our data in whatever form they are.

This volume includes very high quality papers in different areas of computer and information sciences. The main themes are (computer network) performance evaluation and artificial neural networks and their applications. The latest developments in these areas are presented by a number of distinguished researchers from all over the world. These proceedings of The 13th International Symposium on Computer and Information Sciences (ISCIS'98) contain outstanding papers specifically related to the areas of "Gelenbe" neural networks and their applications, performance of computer-communication networks, simulations and analytic methods in order to study the performance of telecommunication networks, scheduling and resource allocation in computer and multimedia systems, stochastic ordering applied to performance evaluation, and simulation of virtual humans.

This book presents the refereed proceedings of the 1998 Ada-Europe International Conference on Reliable Software Technologies, Ada-Europe'98, held in Uppsala, Sweden, in June 1998. The 23 revised full papers presented together with two invited contributions were carefully selected by the program committee. th DEXA 2001, the 12 International Conference on Database and Expert Systems Applications was held on September 3–5, 2001, at the Technical University of Munich, Germany. The rapidly growing spectrum of database applications has led to the establishment of more specialized discussion platforms (DaWaK conference, EC Web conference, and DEXA workshop), which were all held in parallel with the DEXA conference in Munich. In your hands are the results of much effort, beginning with the preparation of the submitted papers. The papers then passed through the reviewing process, and the accepted papers were revised to final versions by their authors and arranged with the conference program. All this culminated in the conference itself. A total of 175 papers were submitted to this conference, and I would like to thank all the authors. They are the real base of the conference. The program committee and the supporting reviewers produced altogether 497 referee reports, on average of 2.84 reports per paper, and selected 93 papers for presentation. Comparing the weight or more precisely the number of papers devoted to particular topics at several recent DEXA conferences, an increase can be recognized in the areas of XMS databases, active databases, and multi and hypermedia efforts. The space devoted to the more classical topics such as information retrieval, distribution and Web aspects, and transaction, indexing and query aspects has remained more or less unchanged. Some decrease is visible for object orientation.

The Eighth International Conference on Extending Database Technology, EDBT 2002, was held in Prague, Czech Republic, March 25–27, 2002. It marks the 50th anniversary of Charles University’s Faculty of Mathematics and Physics and is the most recent in a series of conferences dedicated to the dissemination and exchange of the latest advances in data management. Previous conferences occurred in Konstanz, Valencia, Avignon, Cambridge, Vienna, and Venice. The topical theme of this year’s conference is Data Management in the New Millennium, which encourages the community to see beyond the management of massive databases by conventional database management systems and to extend database technology to support new services and application areas. The intention is to spur greater interest in more integrated solutions to user problems, which often implies the consideration of data management issues in entire information systems infrastructures. There is data (almost) everywhere, and data access is needed (almost) always and everywhere. New technologies, services, and app- cations that involve the broader notion of data management are emerging more rapidly than ever, and the database community has much to o?er. The call for papers attracted numerous submissions, including 207 research papers, which is a new record for EDBT. The program committee selected 36 research papers, 6 industrial and applications papers, 13 software demos, and 6 tutorials for presentation at the conference. In addition, the conference program includes three keynote speeches, by Jari Ahola, Ian Horrocks, and Hans-J ̈org Schek, and a panel.

EDBT 2000 is the seventh conference in a series dedicated to the advancement of database technology. This year’s conference special theme, \Connect Millions of Users and Data Sources," underscores the importance of databases for the information age that is dawning with the new millennium. The importance - rives not just from the observation that the information age essentially rests on theconvergenceofcommunications,computing,andstorage.Equallyimportant, many of the concepts and techniques underlying the success of databasesystems have independent meaning and impact for today’s distributed information s- tems. The papers in the volume should also be seen in this light. This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-workshop proceedings of the 6th International Workshop on Database Programming Languages, DBPL-6, held in Estes Park, Colorado, USA, in August 1997. The 20 revised full papers presented have gone through two rounds of reviewing and selection.
