Held every four years, the International Congress on Fracture is the premier international forum for the exchange of ideas between scientists and engineers involved in producing and using materials resistant to fracture and fatigue. This major six-volume work which forms the proceedings of the Seventh International Congress on Fracture therefore provides the most comprehensive account available of the current status of research into fracture and fatigue, and the application of this knowledge to the design, fabrication and operation of materials and structures. As such, it will be an essential reference for materials scientists and mechanical, structural, aeronautical and design engineers with an interest in fracture and its prevention.

Advances in Fracture Research, Volume 6, documents the proceedings of the 5th International Conference on Fracture (ICF5) held in Cannes, France, 29 March-3 April 1981. The conference was attended by 670 participants from 26 countries. The program consisted of plenary sessions with invited speakers, technical sessions with contributed papers, a poster session, and two round table discussions. This volume contains 14 papers that deal with topics such as advancements in fracture mechanics; the application of fracture mechanics in three areas: damage tolerance requirements for aircraft structures, toughness requirements for bridges and heat up and cool down schedule, and evaluation of in service NDE indications for nuclear pressure vessels; and the analysis of crack-tip stress and strain fields for stationary and growing cracks in inelastic solids under monotonic loading. Also included are papers on the impact of environment on fracture; the problem of fracture of large concrete structures; and microcracking in hydrogenated austenitic steels.

Fracture is a major cause of failure in metallic and non-metallic materials and structures. An understanding of the micro- and macro- mechanisms of fracture enables materials scientists to develop materials with high fracture resistance, which in turn helps engineers and designers to ensure the soundness and integrity of structures made from these materials. The International Congress on Fracture is held every four years and is an occasion to take stock of the major achievements in the broad field of fracture, to honour those who have made lasting contributions to this field, and to reflect on the future directions. Naturally fractured reservoirs constitute a substantial percentage of remaining hydrocarbon resources; they create exploration targets in otherwise impermeable rocks, including under-explored crystalline basement; and they can be used as geological stores for anthropogenic carbon dioxide. Their complex behaviour during production has traditionally proved difficult to predict, causing a large degree of uncertainty in reservoir development. The applied study of naturally fractured reservoirs seeks to constrain this uncertainty by developing new understanding, and is necessarily a broad, integrated, interdisciplinary topic. This book addresses some of the challenges and advances in knowledge, approaches, concepts, and methods used to characterize the interplay of rock matrix and fracture networks, relevant to fluid flow and hydrocarbon recovery. Topics include: describing, characterizing and identifying controls on fracture networks from outcrops, cores, geophysical data, digital and numerical models; geomechanical influences on reservoir behaviour; numerical modelling and simulation of fluid flow; and case studies of the exploration and development of carbonate, siliciclastic and metamorphic naturally fractured reservoirs.

Advanced Fracture Mechanics and Structural Integrity is organized to cover quantitative descriptions of crack growth and fracture phenomena. The mechanics of fracture are explained, emphasizing elastic-plastic and time-dependent fracture mechanics.
