The aim of this book is to bring teacher research to the centre of attention in educational research. Knowledge generated by researching teachers and teacher researchers—often in collaboration with university researchers—identifying new and innovative research methodologies and theories, feeds directly back into theorising practice and the practice of theory that is necessary to improve student learning. This edited volume is unique in that it details diverse teacher research practices and partnerships across a diversity of cultural settings (from Sweden, Turkey, South Africa, Cyprus, Singapore, Hong Kong/China, Australia and the UK). In this volume, 19 internationally acknowledged researchers from nine different countries draw on and develop a new wave of theory and practice for transformative teaching and learning. Hibbert explores South Africa’s higher education crisis utilising case studies and first-hand experiences with English as the language of instruction. The historical overview provides a framework with which to understand the complicated nature of using English as a language of instruction in South Africa, past and present. Student narratives are presented to illustrate mainly breakthroughs, but also challenges. An overview is provided, of imported English teaching methodologies and how they have emerged and developed in the local educational system over decades. It is demonstrated how these methodologies relate to socio-economic and political events and trends at each juncture. By applying defamiliarisation as a research method of investigation, students’ translanguaging struggles are recorded and discussed, both pre-pandemic and in the pandemic period. The experiences of non-monolingual English-speaking staff and students, and of local English/African language bilinguals is foregrounded, as they are by far the majority in South African higher education and schools. The relevance of the experiences and learning paths of those staff and students is enhanced. This book aids lecturers across disciplines and English language facilitators in the improvement of English acquisition curricula through exposure to arguments, case studies and learning path narratives in this volume, and prompts and inspires researchers to develop further theories and experiments in their own context.

This book critically examines the role of governments in promoting parity during and in post-pandemic education. This comes from the realisation that the pandemic has deepened the crisis by depleting the meagre resources that African countries might have devoted to ‘normative educational practices’ where those on the margins would have been pushed further behind while the privileged would have been further initiated into the cultural and capital flows of private schools and historically research-intensive institutions of higher learning. This has far-reaching implications for the education of underprivileged citizens, and education, particularly modes and modalities of delivery, has to be reimagined to subvert the challenges wrought by the pandemic. This book significantly bridges the gap between the pre-and post-COVID-19 pandemic pedagogical practices and the erstwhile modalities that have been resilient over time. The book focuses on ways to stave off pedagogical challenges that face countries as the global pandemic makes its mark.

This book considers how post-secondary chemistry education can be advanced in developing countries, in order to respond to emerging global, regional, and local needs. Taking Guyana as a case study, it pays particular attention to local challenges facing such territories, including human and financial resource shortages, tension between quality and quantity of graduates, cultural inequalities, unequal access to increasingly important Information and Communication Technology or Technologies (ICTs), and increasing competition from international universities in the developed world. Written by a team with over 70 years in combined teaching experience, it asks whether these challenges can be met and overcome and considers how tertiary chemistry education can better meet the rapidly changing needs of society.
