Aiming For Sport

BOOK EXCERPT:

It's Fun To Shoot "An Easy Approach to Popular Recreation for Both Junior and Senior Organizations" This mid-twentieth century promotional booklet (circa 1940s - 1950) was published to encourage and educate Boy Scout/4H/other youth groups about how to go about setting up a small bore practice range and shooting competitions. Topics covered include how to organize your own shooting club, safe range construction (both indoor and outdoor types), The NRA Ranger Program, as well as basic shooting fundamentals and safety practices. While a bit dated in places (i.e. setting up an indoor ranges without an adequate ventilation system, and no mentions of using proper hearing/eye protection), this would still be a great introduction for groups or novice younger shooters. To anyone who learned to shoot at Boy Scout summer camp it will certainly bring back cherished memories. Keywords: small bore, rifle, youth, range, junior, safety,NRA,Boy Scout, beginner, target, training, free, freebie

Watching Sport

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Do we watch sport for pure dumb entertainment? While some people might do so, Stephen Mumford argues that it can be watched in other ways. Sport can be both a subject of high aesthetic values and a valid source for our moral education. The philosophy of sport has tended to focus on participation, but this book instead examines the philosophical issues around watching sport. Far from being a passive experience, we can all shape the way that we see sport. Delving into parallels with art and theatre, this book outlines the aesthetic qualities of sport from the incidental beauty of a well-executed football pass to the enshrined artistic interpretation in performed sports such as ice-skating and gymnastics. It is argued that the purist literally sees sport in a different way from the partisan, thus the aesthetic perception of the purist can be validated. The book moves on to examine the moral lessons that are to be learned from watching sport, depicting it as a contest of virtues. The morality of sport is demonstrated to be continuous with, rather than separate from, the morality in wider life, and so each can inform the other. Watching sport is then recognized as a focus of profound emotional experiences. Collective emotion is particularly considered alongside the nature of allegiance. Finally, Mumford considers why we care about sport at all. Addressing universal themes, this book will appeal to a broad audience across philosophical disciplines and sports studies.

Notational Analysis Of Sport

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

First published in 1997. The aim of the book is to provide a ready manual on notational analysis. The book is written for the sports scientist, the coach, the athlete, or for anyone who wishes to apply analysis to any performance operation. Although this book is applied directly to sport, notational analysis is a procedure that could be used in any discipline that requires assessment and analysis of performance: nursing, surgical operations, skilled manufacturing processes, unskilled manufacturing processes, haute cuisine, and so on. To cater for the anticipated spectrum of readership, the book is written to balance the practical approach (giving plenty of examples) with a sound scientific analysis of the subject area. In this way it is hoped that the practitioners of sport, the athletes and coaches, as well as the sports scientists will find the book useful.

The Philosophy Of Football

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Human beings are the only creatures known to engage in sport. We are sporting animals, and our favourite pastime of football is the biggest sport spectacle on earth. The Philosophy of Football presents the first sustained, in-depth philosophical investigation of the phenomenon of football. In explaining the complex nature of football, the book draws on literature in sociology, history, psychology and beyond, offering real-life examples of footballing actions alongside illuminating thought experiments. The book is organized around four main themes considering the character, nature, analysis and aesthetics of football. It discusses football as an extra-ordinary, unnecessary, rule-based, competitive, skill-based physical activity, articulated as a social (as opposed to natural) kind that is fictional in character, and where fairness or fair play – contrary to much sport ethical discussion – is not centre stage. Football, it is argued, is a constructive- destructive contact sport and, in comparison to other sports, is lower scoring and more affected by chance. The latter presents to its spectators a more unpredictable game and a darker, more complex and denser drama to enjoy. The Philosophy of Football deepens our understanding of the familiar features of the game, offering novel interpretations on what football is, how and why we play it, and what the game offers its followers that makes us so eagerly await match day. This is essential reading for anybody with an interest in the world’s most popular game or in the philosophical or social study of sport.
