AIslamic Philosophy from Its Origin to the Present offers a comprehensive overview of Islamic philosophy from the ninth century to the present day. As Seyyed Hossein Nasr attests, within this tradition, philosophizing is done in a world in which prophecy is the central reality of life—a reality related not only to the realms of action and ethics but also to the realm of knowledge. Comparisons with Jewish and Christian philosophies highlight the relation between reason and revelation, that is, philosophy and religion. Nasr presents Islamic philosophy in relation to the Islamic tradition as a whole, but always treats this philosophy as philosophy, not simply as intellectual history. Qur'anic Hermeneutics argues for the importance of understanding the polysemous nature of the words in the Qur'an and outlines a new method of Qur'anic exegesis called intertextual polysemy. By interweaving science, history and religious studies, Abdulla Galadari introduces a linguistic approach which draws on neuropsychology. This book features examples of intertextual polysemy within the Qur'an, as well as between the Qur'an and the Bible. It provides examples that intimately engage with Christological concepts of the Gospels, in addition to examples of allegorical interpretation through inner-Qur'anic allusions. Galadari reveals how new creative insights are possible, and argues that the Qur'an did not come to denounce the Gospel–which is one of the stumbling blocks between Islam and Christianity–but only to interpret it in its own words.

In 385 AH/AD 995 the Qāḍī ‘Abd al-Jabbār, well known for his Mu‘tazilī theological writings, wrote the Confirmation of the Proofs of Prophecy, a work that includes a creative polemic against Christianity. ‘Abd al-Jabbār reinterprets the Bible, Church history (especially the lives of Paul and Constantine) and Christian practice to argue that Christians changed the Islamic religion of Jesus. The present work begins with an examination of the controversial theory that this polemic was borrowed from an unkown Judaeo-Christian group. The author argues that ‘Abd al-Jabbār's polemic is better understood as a response to his particular milieu and the on-going inter-religious debates of the medieval Islamic world. By examining the life and thought of ‘Abd al-Jabbār, along with the Islamic, Christian and Jewish antecedants to his polemic, the author uncovers the intimate relationship between sectarian controversy and the development of an Islamic doctrine on Christianity.

This book explores the relationship between custom and Islamic law and seeks to uncover the role of custom in the construction of legal rulings. On a deeper level, however, it deals with the perennial problem of change and continuity in the Islamic legal tradition (or any tradition for that matter).

The book analyzes extensively al-Zamakhsharī’s tafsīr al Kashshāf within the framework of the Mu‘tazilites’ five principles: (usūl al-khamsa) of their theology. Andrew Lane in his book entitled “A Traditional Mu‘tazilite Qur’ān Commentary: The Kashshāf of Jār Allāh al-Zamakhsharī” states that al-Kashshāf is not a Mu‘tazilite tafsīr of the Qur’ān. This book has been written to prove that al-Zamakhsharī’s tafsīr is completely in accord with the Mu‘tazilites’ theology which is embodied in their five principles. The book is divided into two parts. Part I comprises of al Zamakhsharī’s biography, al-Kashshāf, and his methodology of tafsīr. Part II covers comprehensive analysis of the five principles: unity of God; justice; the promise and the threat of divine reward and punishment; the intermediate position between belief and unbelief; and enjoining what is right and forbidding what is wrong. The book concludes that al-Zamakhsharī’s al-Kashshāf is a Mu‘tazilite tafsīr completely adhering to the Mu‘tazilites’ theology.

Emerging data suggest a link between Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and epilepsy. AD and other dementias pose increased risk for seizures, with seizure incidence in AD up to ten times greater than in age-matched controls. Mouse models of AD also demonstrate seizures and abnormal spikes or sharp wave discharges (“interictal epileptiform discharges” [IEDs]) on electroencephalography (EEG). Seizures and IEDs may underlie fluctuating cognitive abilities in AD, with the impact of antiseizure medication (ASM) requiring further investigation. Many epilepsy patients have memory and other cognitive deficits, due to multiple factors. Most adult-onset epilepsy occurs in people =60 years of age, and epilepsy patients are at increased risk of developing dementia. Hyperphosphorylated tau and amyloid deposits were found in resected temporal lobe tissue of epilepsy patients, similar to AD, and increased total and phosphorylated tau levels in the cerebrospinal fluid may predict the onset of AD and other dementias. The mechanisms underlying the associations between AD, epilepsy, tau deposition, and beta amyloid plaques, and their relationships to clinical features, are unknown. Some epilepsy patients develop dementia, and some AD patients develop seizures, while others do not. Analyses of resected tissue in epilepsy patients also suggest variable amyloid and tau deposition across patients and studies. Who is at risk? What does shared pathology indicate regarding disease development, progression, and treatment? Better understanding of the associations between epilepsy and dementia with respect to epidemiology, pathophysiology, genetics, clinical presentations, and treatment approaches based on animal models and human studies is needed to optimize patient care. Insight into the relationship between epilepsy and AD requires various approaches, including tissue analysis, imaging, genetic techniques, cognitive testing, and electroencephalography in animals and humans. We welcome manuscripts that span these approaches, including original research articles, brief research articles, clinical trials, case reports, reviews, systematic reviews, mini-reviews, methods articles, hypothesis and theory articles, perspectives, and opinions. Themes may include: • Diagnosis (e.g., seizure or interictal discharge detection in dementia patients, distinguishing comorbid dementia from epilepsy-related cognitive dysfunction) • Epidemiology (e.g., incidence and prevalence of comorbid AD and epilepsy, occurrence of epilepsy in other dementias, seizure types, age or stage of onset) • Genetic risk factors • Pathophysiology underlying seizure generation in AD and cognitive decline in epilepsy • Treatment approaches (e.g., effects of ASMs on cognitive decline, impact of disease modifying AD treatments on seizures, neurostimulation) • What can be learned from other disorders in which cognitive deficits and seizures are common (i.e., traumatic brain injury)
