BOOK EXCERPT:
Alan Rickman is the most powerful and sexiest character actor to emerge from Britain in the last decade. Having established himself as a major classical stage actor Rickman transferred to the Hollywood screen with a glint in his eye and a sly smile. From Les Liaisons Dangereuses and Robin Hood to Truly, Madly, Deeply, Sense & Sensibility and Die Hard he has proved himself the most interesting and versatile British actor of his generation. He inspires devotion and adoration in his fans and colleagues, and yet what exactly lies behind that sly smile? Is he as difficult as his reputation suggests? How similar is he to the seductively wicked villains he specializes in, and how true is he to his political ideals? Maureen Paton explores the actor's closely guarded private life and goes beyond the public persona to find the real Rickman, the working class boy. Maureen Paton's biography uncovers the tracks of his professional, political and emotional past to finally reveal this most secret of stars.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Born into a working-class family in Caterham, Surrey, in 1949, Bill attended the Guildford School of Dance and Drama before embarking on a two-year theatre stint in Liverpool. His London stage debut came in 1977 at the National Theatre, and many more theatre, radio and television appearances followed, including radio performances of Yes Minister for the BBC. He has said that the job that launched his career was 1991 BBC series The Men's Room. In 1998, he first came to international prominence with his role as a washed-up rock star in Hollywood film Still Crazy. But it was the Richard Curtis smash hit Love Actually, in 2004, that really propelled Bill into the limelight - many though that his performance as shameless old rocker Billy Mack was one of the best of the whole film, and it earned him a BAFTA for Best Supporting Actor. Since then, Bill has earned yet more plaudits, starring in the acclaimed TV drama State of Play and Gideon's Daughter, and appearing once again on the silver screen in the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy and hit comedy Rock the Boat. His wit, charm and on-screen presence have endeared him to legions of fans, and his film and TV work shows that he is an accomplished performer who can bring a touch of magic to any role. This is the fascinating story of one of the most intriguing and entertaining characters in show-business.

Hugh Grant is the quintessential English movie star. He is also a man of opposites; his easy charm belies a malicious wit and as heart throb star of Four Weddings and a Funeral he shocked the world when police found him enjoying the services of a Sunset Boulevard prostitute. Jody Tresidder, who has written this first, hugely revealing biography of Britain's most famous film star, was a teenage love of Hugh Grant's. She has uncovered all facets of the man - his boyish appeal, his glamorous relationship with Liz Hurley and the darker side that he can longer conceal.
