BOOK EXCERPT:
From the Man Booker Prize-nominated author of Sleeping on Jupiter and “one of India’s greatest living authors” (O, The Oprah Magazine), a poignant and sweeping novel set in India during World War II and the present day about a son’s quest to uncover the truth about his mother. In my childhood, I was known as the boy whose mother had run off with an Englishman. The man was in fact German, but in small‑town India in those days, all white foreigners were largely thought of as British. So begins the “gracefully wrought” (Kirkus Reviews) story of Myshkin and his mother, Gayatri, who rebels against tradition to follow her artist’s instinct for freedom. Freedom of a different kind is in the air across India. The fight against British rule is reaching a critical turn. The Nazis have come to power in Germany. At this point of crisis, two strangers arrive in Gayatri’s town, opening up to her the vision of other possible lives. What took Myshkin’s mother from India and Dutch-held Bali in the 1930s, ripping a knife through his comfortingly familiar universe? Excavating the roots of the world in which he was abandoned, Myshkin comes to understand the connections between the anguish at home and a war‑torn universe overtaken by patriotism. Evocative and moving, “this mesmerizing exploration of the darker consequences of freedom, love, and loyalty is an astonishing display of Roy’s literary prowess” (Publishers Weekly).

BOOK EXCERPT:
Postcolonialism as a theoretical cogitation is bracketed under cultural studies. Postcolonial studies in literature refers to the narratives from or on the nations that were colonised previously. The history is such that even countries like America and Great Britain were colonised before the transformation in the position and outlook from colonised to coloniser. Yet, the narratives of Great Britain or even America do not fall under the categorisation of postcolonial studies. This is because of their elevation to the status of super power and big brother. Given this context what remains the logic behind this nomenclature. For the sake of simpler understanding, any country colonised by European countries, particularly Great Britain is referred to as a colonised country. This will constitute India, Middle East, Africa, Carribean Islands, Latin America, Australia and Sri Lanka among others. It can be easily said that Europe as a continent, invaded then subdued rest of the continents in the world.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Through exploring complex suffering in the writings of Aminatta Forna, Isabel Allende and Anuradha Roy, Women Writing Trauma in the Global South dismantles conceptual shortcomings and problematic imbalances at the core of existing theorizations around psychological trauma. The global constellation of women writers from Sierra Leone, Chile and India facilitates a productive analysis of how the texts navigate intertwined experiences of individual and systemic trauma. The discussion departs from a recent critical turn in literary and cultural trauma studies and transgresses many interrelated boundaries of geocultural contexts, language and genre. Discovering the role of literary forms in reparative articulation and empathic witnessing, this critical intervention develops new ideas for an inclusive conceptual expansion of trauma from the global peripheries and contributes to the ongoing debate on marginalized suffering.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Between the first and second decade of the millennium, women across the world reconsidered the sexual roles they had been playing under patriarchy. The 2012 protests in India triggered some of this global change, ushering Indians squarely into the desired yet uncomfortable " third wave" feminism which demands the recognition of women as sexual subjects. Beginning from the premise that each country is in a unique relationship to patriarchy, Women's Sexuality in India: In a Rapture of Distress offers pictures of how individual Indian women locate their sexuality amidst the fantasies of Indian patriarchy, and of world culture that imagine their sexuality for them. Built from a data set of upper-middle class women, the book opens up a number of provocative questions. How is dismantling the patriarchy in the imagination different from fighting patriarchy in the outer world? What aspects of sex under patriarchy do women want to give up, and what would they like to keep? What conflicts unfold when daughters welcome as "sexual liberation" ideas that their mothers believed had "come from the west", a west that has been, until fairly recently, a hated colonial oppressor? How did the control of upper-middle class women's sexuality serve as an anchor for collective anxieties about the inherent instability of gender and sexuality? What is the nature of the spectator effect when post-sexual revolution countries listen to the sexuality narratives of countries like India that have not had a sexual revolution?
