American Horror Show describes the last weeks of the 2016 election, Trump’s victory, his transition and construction of a scandal-ridden cabinet and administration, to his inaugural speech and the first 30 days of his presidency. The text uses a multidimensional analysis to explain Trump’s victory, including his mobilization of an authoritarian populist movement, the use of fake news to attack Hillary Clinton, the intervention of FBI Director James Comey 11 days before the election, claiming that another investigation of Clinton’s emails was underway, and the intervention of Russian hacking of Democratic Party email and the use of this email against Clinton. Questions are raised concerning relationships between the Russian hacking and attacks against Clinton and members of Trump’s campaign. Finally, the first 30 days of Trump’s administration show that he is a rightwing billionaire and militarist who has carried out an extreme rightwing Republican agenda and is not a populist concerned about the working class.

This book traces a trend that has emerged in recent years within the modern panorama of American horror film and television, the concurrent—and often overwhelming—use of multiple stock characters, themes and tropes taken from classics of the genre. American Horror Story, Insidious and The Conjuring are examples of a filmic tendency to address a series of topics and themes so vast that at first glance each taken separately would seem to suffice for individual films or shows. This book explores this trend in its visible connections with American Horror, but also with cultural and artistic movements from outside the US, namely Baroque art and architecture, Asian Horror, and European Horror. It analyzes how these hybrid products are constructed and discusses the socio-political issues that they raise. The repeated and excessive barrage of images, tropes and scenarios from distinct subgenres of iconic horror films come together to make up an aesthetic that is referred to in this book as Baroque Horror. In many ways similar to the reactions provoked by the artistic movement of the same name that flourished in the XVII century, these productions induce shock, awe, fear, and surprise. Eljaiek-Rodríguez details how American directors and filmmakers construct these narratives using different and sometimes disparate elements that come together to function as a whole, terrifying the audience through their frenetic accumulation of images, tropes and plot twists. The book also addresses some of the effects that these complex films and series have produced both in the panorama of contemporary horror, as well as in how we understand politics in a divisive world that pushes for ideological homogenizations.

Meanings, Tensions, and Contradictions in U.S. History, language: English, abstract: Looking at movies like "Freaks" or "American Horror Show", the question is how this concept can be understood in the context of 'freaks' and 'freakishness', whether it is sorely related to physical deformity, how this concept is expressed culturally, what "horror" is and how it works. Above all, there is the question of how 'freaks' and 'freakishness' are associated with horror. How they are supposed to generate fear in the viewer, and how this could be concretely illustrated by an example. The series "American Horror Show: Freak Show" and the episode "Rosa Cubcakes" are approached from the perspective of these questions. In order to find basic answers to these questions, the first part of this work roughly deals with 'freaks' in American history and culture, terms are explained and the understanding of freaks and their representation in films is discussed. This is followed by a reference to monsters and their connection to the horror genre, which is outlined in its early development in America. In order to understand the effect of horror in films better, basic, typical film techniques of the horror genre are discussed. In the second part a short introduction of the series follows and then the analysis of the episode Rosa Cupcakes where the focus lies on the representation of 'freaks' and 'freakishness' with their connection to horror.
