The author felt that the time had arrived when “schools” of social psychology may properly be regarded as obsolete and the subject as a whole may be presented systematically. At the time social psychology was emerging as a separate discipline and overlapped a very large portion of social science, psychology and education. In this respect it was central to all psychological and social science disciplines. This volume treats the subject from the standpoint of the more objective factors which integrate the personality and its responses in a social environment. Today it can be read in its historical context. This book is a re-issue originally published in 1927. If a theory of education is to be helpful to the practising teacher, it must take the social context of learning into account. Originally published in 1982, Colin Rogers does just this, exploring the implications of two decades’ detailed research in to the social psychology of teaching and learning. The central theme that emerges from this study is the importance of the still controversial ‘teacher-expectancy effect’ – the effect of teachers’ expectations on the performance of pupils. By examining in detail the claims made by those who believe that the expectations of teachers can influence levels of pupils’ academic attainment, the book shows the complexity of interpersonal interaction and perception within the classroom and the nature of problems involved in studying these. It also focuses on the way that the mutual perceptions of teachers and pupils themselves affect, and are affected by, other aspects of life in a school; and extensive use is made of research conducted in British schools to illustrate major points. The conclusion of the study was that it is the classroom – the very environment in which teachers and pupils interact – rather than teacher training that may need reform.

George Herbert Mead (1863-1931) is a central, founding figure of modern sociology, comparable to Karl Marx and Max Weber. Mead's early work, prior to his posthumous publications that appeared after 1932, is believed to be a series of articles contemporary scholarship defines as disconnected. A previously unknown, never published set of galleys for a book of essays by Mead, written between 1892 and 1910, unites these articles into a logical perspective. This fact necessarily renders the content of social psychology voluminous. It is no longer possible to treat this subject adequately in small compass. The text-books which have so far appeared, although for the most part excellent from their several viewpoints, are nevertheless but partial treatments. So notably true is this that there exists a marked controversy as to what properly constitutes social psychology. In Part I of this volume an attempt has been made to bring this controversy into relief for the purpose of enabling the reader to see the subject as a whole. Originally the writer intended to publish this volume in five parts to make the synthetic treatment more pronounced. But the length of the volume as thus planned was prohibitive and it was decided to change the plan somewhat. The synthetic character of the treatment has been retained, but the detailed presentation of the process of the development of personality and of self and social consciousness has been reserved for a second volume. The present volume treats the subject from the standpoint of the more objective factors which integrate the personality and its responses in a social environment. Throughout it has been the intention of the writer, not only to make the treatment complete in itself, but to keep the presentation on such a level that the volume can be used successfully as a second book in social theory, following directly upon the introductory course in sociology in departments sociology.
